Clutch pedal sticking

Featured Replies

Hi all, does anyone have a problem with their clutch pedal sticking? If so, do you have any remedies?

Sounds like the old sticking master cylinder. This seems to show itself when the weather is cold, unfortunatly only fix is a new one. Not sure of cost though as it never went wrong on my old vRS.

If the problem has coincided with cold weather then it could be that the clutch master cylinder needs replacing with a modified one which cures the problem. Some members - myself included - have had their cars fixed under warranty. A new master cylinder is around £46.

Opps. Beaten to it. But at least the answer is the same. :)

In agreement, it happens when the weather gets a bit cold. A new cylinder from Skoda is about £36 + VAT, you can get them from a motor factors, we tried an alternative supply and got a Lucas boxed unit which was £30 more than the Skoda one - we sent it straight back.

Yep , master cylinder gets my vote.

On a frosty morning mine buried itself in the carpet and was fixed under warranty

It happens on mine too, just shove your boot under it and pull it back up again.

Don't cure the fault but will keep you moving till the next cold spell.

Hi, I've got a similar problem. My 2005 Octavia 1.9 TDi judders quite severly for the first two gear changes in the morning. Seems to happen when the weather is a bit colder. After two changes it stops and doesn't re-occur when the car is warm. Any ideas anyone?

I'm going to tak it back to the dealer, but I know they'll say they can't re-create the problem unless I can be more specific about the problem.

Sounds like a clutch or more than likely a dual mass flywheel issue.

I have just bought a 2002 1.9 Sdi Fabia Estate with this problem.

From reading the threads it appears to only affect diesel versions (others cable?).

The fix seems to be to fit a replacement modified master cylinder. I might get the garage to do it under the 3-month warranty.

Can anyone tell me who has had the problem if they are able to live with it? Some posts suggest it only happens in cold weather and occasionally. I've only had the car two days but lifting the pedal cured the problem but obviously not the fault.

Thanks in advance

Richard

The clutch master cylinder is common to petrol and diesel Octavias. I had a similar problem which was fixed by replacing the master cylinder under warranty for a later modified one. If you have the option, get yours fixed under warranty too since the problem will recur in cold weather.

Thx DGW. I posted in the wrong forum. The sticky clutch is on a Fabia, but my google search suggests this is a defective master cylinder used in Skodas, VWs Seats Audi TTs and Rovers. I suspect there are others.

I think manufacturers need to think long and hard about epidemic faults. Fitness for purpose legislation and liability if the failure could cause a collision. Do VW directors sleep at night knowing defective master cylinders limit clutch operation at a critical time?

In a past life I worked for a TV manufacturing company. Only problem was a certain model range had the slight disadvantage of catching fire. Why on earth would anyone want to conceal this - but fat cats only think of their fat bonuses. People died.
