vRS TDi MPG

Featured Replies

How many TLAs in a thread title?

What kind of fuel consumption are drivers of the sooty vRS seeing? I might get one as a company car but want to make sure the 10p per mile I'd get for diesel recompense will see me right.

Steve

I’d be surprised if you could break even at 10p/mile. My 1.9Tdi does a real (not trip computer) 50.7 to the gallon.

You can work out the pence per mile from the following:

Pence per mile =Price per litre times 4.546 divided by MPG

So my pence per mile = 91.9x4.546/50.6 = 8.3 assuming the diesel costs 91.9

Or to calculate how many MPG you need to do to break even:

MPG=Price per litre x 4.546 divided by pence per mile

So for Steve its 91.9*4.546/10= 41.8mpg

I would be interested to see if the PD170 really is more economical than the PD140 as the quoted figures suggest. :)

Mine is getting noticeably better, at 1400 miles I now can easily hit 50mpg on a run, climbing to 60mpg if I drive carefully. By comparison getting much over 40mpg was very tricky when I first got it.

Where does it say the PD170 is getting better MPG than the PD140 :o

I have had the fun of driving a couple of PD170s and i can't see any way you can call it an economical diesel. Economical yes, but not for an oil burner.

Well I've got one for the morning on Thursday so I'll see how it does. I must admit the car choice is between the vRS and a Volvo V50 and I'm leaning towards the Volvo.

Steve

I use a 1.9tdi at work...and I'm not that nice to the car....and I usually hit around 55MPG over a combined motorway and town driving (usualy do long distances tho).

Cars done about 27k miles now...and I gotta say, it no where feels like just a 105BHP motor.

IIRC the PD170's official combined mpg figures were higher originally, but that was before this PD140 economy change buisness. I think the PD140 was originally quoted at 47.9mpg, the PD170 at 48.something combined.

Right.

I drove the vRS all morning and loved it. It had 30 miles on the clock when I picked it up and looked resplendent in red. My little lad was thrilled as I'd come home in "Lightning McQueen"!

I'm too young for a Volvo ;) Order will be going to the lease company in the new year!

Steve

Just checked on the Fleet News Website which is used by most companys and they list the 170 Tdi vrs fuel costs at 8.57 pence per mile.

My vRS diesel has now done just over 500 miles so is still a bit tight but according to the trip computer; on the 175 motorway drive home from the dealer it averaged 47 mpg and on the 11 mile urban journey to work this morning it did 38.1 mpg.

  • 6 months later...

I've had my 2.0L 170 diesel Vrs for 3 weeks now and it's done 2800 miles.

I've run it below 3000 rpm and not taken it over 70.

Most of the miles have been motorway and the cruise has been on keeping it steady.

The first 1000 miles gave me 34 mpg and it's now giving 41 mpg.

My Golf GT TDi used to give me 55-60 and I was expecting it to be close to that.

Anyone got any ideas?? ??

On my 9 mile jaunt to work through the local backroads the computer can read around 40 - 47 mpg. When I drove to Goodwood in June, using cruise control when possible, I managed 45mpg. Which I was impressed with. Think on a nice smooth A road I could get it into the 50's. Still loving the torque.

In early life around 1,000 miles, I'm just about to roll over 6,000 miles, I did two 425 mile trips of mixed M'way/fast and slow A roads driving briskly (as a Briskodian should do) and returned 42-43mpg.

For my general driving, which is daily 25 miles eachway into NW London, I am currently averaging 38-39mpg per tankfull of 450 miles. I find that steady speeds of 50-60-70mpg helps with the trip mpg moving to 44-45-46 mpg, but that traffic jams really crucify the readings below 35mpg!

Cosidering that my previous 'chipped' 1.4mpi Fabia would only return 32-34mpg (35-36mpg pre-chip) for my daily jaunt and had nowhere near the performance available that my vRS TDI has, these figures are nigh on miraculous.

NB> Figures are all taken from the trip computer and I really ought to work out a 'true' figure based on actual fuel/mileage.

Cruise control set to 65mph and a bit of careful planning so to avoid too much braking and i'm getting about 52mpg on a 50 odd miles commute down the M1/A50. You do have to take it steady to get that though, more normal consumption is about 45mpg. Mine has now done 19.5k.

I've done a few checks against the accuracy of the trip computer by comparing the amount of fuel used versus the miles driven and the trip computer has been accurate to within 0.5mpg across 500 miles of driving on every occasion. That's the best I've seen a trip computer do - my other cars could have been nearly 5mpg out!

By the way, I can get 50mpg on a 70mph motorway run easily and I'd say the typical consumption across the cars life is in the order of 47mpg (8000 miles on the clock). That's mainly sedate motorway driving with brisk A road use!

Your MPG will improve more and more as the engine loosens up . It takes a while , but as long as you avoid the LEAD FOOT (difficult sometimes I know ! ) you should see a vast improvement in even the shorter journeys once the engine wears in .

Just hope its as good as the Dealers say (cos I've got one on order) . my Audi 20TDI 56Plate was getting better and better after 3000 miles .... then I had to give it back !.

DOH !!

Regards,

Bob.

As you say; that is impressively accurate for a trip computer.

Hmm; my driving is mainly fast M'way or congested urban and very brisk elsewhere (when given the chance); hence I can't often better 40mpg. :D :D

Mind you at 47mpg you will be in 'profit' on your business mileage/refund claim; well perhaps just enough for a pint (of beer) on a Frdiay night! ;)

Mine too; I'm using half a litre per 3,000 miles.
