Cheers for the info mate. I'll probably go for the previous upgrade that you suggested. I called my local computer shop today to see what they would give me for my celeron 2.8 ghz system. It has 512mb ram, geforce fx5200 card, 17" tft, and all the little extras. He said he'd give me £100............AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!

You can decide whether you want to ditch the whole system and get (only!) £100 for it. If you take the screen away, you may only be offered £50 because the screen is quite valuable and with no screen, it's hardly a "complete system" that he can then flog on second hand for £150...

Personally, I'd hang onto the TFT - you can reuse it on its own or with another screen in a dual-screen / extended desktop environment or have it as a spare. Always handy.

I might just have 2 seperate computers and use 1 for downloading music & movies and burning them. Then use the other for just gaming. It's the more expensive option, but it will save me wiping and re-installing 2 years worth of software and files.

Sell it to a student for £200 fully working :)

Window (or linux if you have licensing issues ;) ) and open office (from openoffice.org)

Visited my local computer shop and he has quoted me the following

Core 2 Dup E6300

Asrock conroe xfire esata2

1gb DDr2 667

geforce 7900gs 512mb

500w psu (keep existing case)

all for

So you are not a big fan of online shopping then?

The Asrock mobo is a Intel945. You can easily pick up Intel965 board for 20-30 pounds more, which is designed for C2D cpu.

Make sure the PSU is from a well known brand and can pull 20A on its 12v rail, since I believe that 7900 requires 20A according to nvidia. But others say their 7900 runs fine with 18A.

I think more information about the ram, graphic card and PSU would help (e.g. brand, model).

Seems a lot of cash for what you are looking at and not I would say they are budget parts.

I wouldn't buy them at that price.

That novatech deal linked above is half the price and they are a real store with a counter and lots of staff to speak with too.

They are based near portsmouth, but are pretty reliable.

I don't mind shopping online and have dealt with Scan before when I built a previous system. All I'm looking for is the best deal with the least hassle as I have a pretty demanding job time wise. I'm on holiday the first week of feb so may order parts and build then.

If you were going to up your budget to say,

Novatech one is already built and tested....you just put in the missing pieces that you want....last one I did it took all of 30 mins to fit the hard drive and DVD etc works great, the Novatech company has been going for at least 10 years and has always given excellent service.....10 out of ten from me
