Bigger turbo

Featured Replies

My fellow members,

I have read a lot of threads about the power increase to be had from a bigger KO4 / IHI turbo and a remap.

Would I achieve a similar power increase from adding a bigger turbo to the remap I already have on my 1.8T Elegance?

you would probably gain something but not everything as the map would need to be for the new turbo to take advantage of it.

Think also the idea of a Garrett 28RS or something bigger!

You should install forged piston and rods with Garett GT28RS or it isn't necessary??

I think it can achieve about 350 bhp++ which is far too much for a stock 150bhp 1.8T engine...

350bhp and the same ion torque is touch and go on standard internals. it depends on how hard and how often you drive it hard.

Bengie is correct on this. My previous Octy RS ran 340bhp on a standard clutch and internals...without any problems.

Torque is the main killer of killer and clutches...as such is was mapped to take this into consideration.

With uprated clutch and internals the torque could have been wound up another 50lbs/ft2.

For some turbos you can swap and it will run ok....E05 for examples...but I would say putting an IHI / GT28 wouldn't even run with standard map...remap may do...but why take the chance of everything going FUBAR??

it would definitly run but it would just boost later than standard without making an extra power as the built in safety and control devices would just be requesting and regulating the boost but teh turbo will be producing the boost at a different rpm and probably quicker when it does come in.

My vRs is running on a normal turbo I don`t want a remap can I just upgrade the turbo and if so which is the best in to go for and prices

Pmsl!!

IIRC, the IHI comes in at a little under £1500... Makes a remap seem cheap ;)

No it needs a new remap to work properly. It will be probably be undrivable if you just swapped the turbo over - and all the 'big' turbos (GT, IHIs etc) couldn't just be swapped over, they would need new manifold, downpipe + exhaust, injectors etc. so no it wouldn't work. Just remember the remap is always the last thing you get done so it can take advantage of everything you have done to your car.

Thanks for the advice

can i just ask a totally stupid question:rofl:

why is it that on these engines a remap does not give the huge boost in power that you would get with other manufacturers.is it the small turbo that holds it back.

i have mates that in the past could get the little cvh 1.6rs up to at least 190bhp with nothing more than a chip and with an 1.8 zetec conversion 240+ was possible and this was on an old engine that would have been designed over 25 years ago.

look at jap cars with smallish engines and look at the bhp that can be achieved on them with relatively little expense.look at the jap cars now that are pushing over 200 bhp on normally aspirated engines.

with the skoda you need to shell out for an exhaust, better air intake, uprated dv and then a custom remap just to get up to the 230 mark and anything over this needs the large expense of a fmic.200+ bhp in todays market is not that uncommon yet we need to spend a fair bit of money to achieve this.if i was driving a vw gti turbo with only 150 bhp then i would be really peeved:D

like i said this was probably a stupid question so go easy on me and only came about after chatting with my mechanic who is driving a chipped imprezza which is putting out 280 bhp and is just silly fast:D

obviously anything over about 220 bhp is just going to get spun away in a fwd anyway but that isnt the point.

you do realise that the engines in the skoda's are the same engines as in the vw's, audi's, seats's and certain models from people like ford??

those jap cars that are making 200bhp, how much torque are they making and where do they make their power?? they make their power at silly revs like 7400 and they make only about 140lbft not the 200+ that a 1.8T is making at 200bhp.

when you say zetec conversion on an escort what do you mean exactly?? a ZVH? is that a zetect bottom end and cvh head or vice versa? but anyway the fords are so damned good because they can make 240+ with a fully rebuilt spec'd up engine? woohoo! there are people on here making 400+ with new internals, turbo/manifold, injectors and map plus all the little niggly things that get forgotton.

and the VW golf GTi 1.8T was only 150bhp
