FM is fine - where's MW/LW?

Featured Replies

Any suggestions as to why I have no MW/LW reception? I've only had my car for a week or so, so haven't had time to investigate. FM is loud and clear, but MW just silence.

No LW means no test match coverage while I'm commuting - which some may say is a bonus - so I'm keen for a quick fix!

Thanks

Assume you tried tuning in AM channels? If you're London and SE based then Radio 4 TMS is on medium wave.

Does your car have the original stereo with skoda auto on it, or is it aftermarket?.

Yep, I've tried all of the main frequencies - 5Live, TalkSport, 4LW etc. Nothing. It's the original Symphony unit that's fitted.

hmm, thats strange then. The only thing I can think of is that the amp in the base of the aerial has failed. You wont get mw/lw if it has but fm will appear to be fine.

If its like the one on mine where you have a button marked A/F, press it down for a few seconds then the band will change to AM - presume you have done this already- is there any sound coming from the speakers at all ? If not the radio could be defective or some problem with the connection to the aerial?

I've been trawling through t'interweb, and my reception problem may be down to the amplifier that is built into the aerial not working. I guess I will have to remove the Head Unit and look to see if there is power to the amp.

Ah well, at least the test series is all but over - so I won't need LW. I will need my fix of MW (5Live) otherwise it's radio 2 all day - I'm turning into my parents!

Thanks for your ideas.

Here's a weird thing - when I switch the radio on, it's fine (clear mw/lw reception) for about two seconds then it fades to nothing. FM / CD are fine. Baffled I am.
