POP3 shinadigans.....

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Can someone help me with me new POP3 email addy?

I am trying to get it onto outlook express.

I've bought a domain with 123-reg.co.uk and an email address.

They've emailed me with my address and details of getting it onto outlook.

So what I have done is.

In new account, input the email address sent to me, where it says email address:

Email address: ***** at pophost.123-reg.co.uk[/email]

Reply address: james at *********.co.uk - this is my domain address

So is the above correct to start with?

Then in servers, POP3, I input pophost.123-reg.co.uk - which they told me to do and outgoing mail I input mail.btinternet.com which is what the other account is...

Testing it I can receive emails fine and dandy, but when I try sending them, I get this:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'james **********.co.uk'. Subject 'as', Account: 'Mail', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 authentication required - Your email could not be sent. To fix this you must make a simple change to your email (known as SMTP authentication). For advice visit www.btyahoo.com/smtp', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you :)

Most domains won't allow you to send email from an address with a different domain. This is to help stop people using them for spamming. Do 123-reg not provide an SMTP server as well?

Unfortunately the link they provide is out of date, but if you trawl around on the BT site you may be able to find it again. Basically they're asking you to prove you're a BT customer before they allow you to send email via their server.

Thinking about it what you probably need to do is tick the box in Outlook that says "server requires authentication" and enter your btinternet account details in the fields below.

I'd agree that they want to know you are a BT customer before using their SMTP server as a mail proxy.

Thanks for your help.

I am now getting this:

The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: 'Mail', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 8BITMIME', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

Do you have the "logon using secure password authentication" box ticked? Untick it ...
