Superb 1.9TDi - engine problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im a Superb owner :) Yes - we do exist !

I have a great 1.9TDi Comfort model. Great car - (next time I wonder if Skoda will remember we dont all go skiing - lets have split rear seats.)

But --- the engine sounds awful. I get a deep throaty roar from it on acceleration - even slight acceleration. Whilst I would probably pay for such a noise on a Rally car - not on this superb. Dealer says its normal. I have driven a Passat 1.9tdi - it does not have this roar.

Anyone else got a Superb for comparison ???

Welcome to Briskoda! :D

The only point I'd like to make is that the Passat probably has better

soundproofing than the Skoda, so you wouldn't notice the noise as much.

I suppose a way to compare would be to use a second car (hire one

if needs be  ) and go test driving other Superbs from other

dealerships and see if they make the same noise...

Rob.

Good afternoon and welcome. Glad you like your car, I too think they are very nice.

On to your problem, 3 alternatives:

1. Take a different car to another Skoda dealer and have a test drive in their TDI and see how it compares. You might want to try several.

2. Wait for an opinion from another TDI owner on here, preferably a Superb, but failing that an Octavia as they are the same engine.

3. Turn up the radio

As a question to you, what's the stereo like in the Superb? Its just that most Octavia owners seem to be changing bits of their system

Hi and welcome!

is it a PD 130 engine?

Supposedly the PD engines do make a little more noise to the TDIs. Something to due with the shutting of the pump valves or something aliong those lines.

My previous Octavia was a 110 TDI and although obviously a diesel at start you be hard pressed to tell when driving.

Cheers.

Adrian

I test drove a Superb TDI 130 yesterday, and i would probably agree that the engine noise is a bit more throaty compared to my current 98 Octavia estate ( 90 hp) but definitely not intrusive at all. The performane of the TDI130 was amazing, as was the car as a whole which has led me to order a TDI 130 in Comfort trim.

I cant wait, but sorry to see my Octy go.

Oh yes the stereo was also good, a vaste improvement on anything from Skoda I have seen so far.

Cheers

I have driven the 2.5 V6 Tdi Superb , and the soundproofing seemed fine on that as it didnt seem noisy at all! I have heard that the PD engines are a very noisy deisel engine , and the 150 PD is supposed to be even noisier , something about the pressure everything is under in that engine. Oh and in the car i drove (Comfort spec) it had the same stereo as the RS , a symphony unit , but it did sound a lot better , i take it the speakers are better in the Superb!

The dealer was probably fobbing you off with the "oh, they all do that" phrase. They should hook it up to a diagnostics machine. If the timing is incorrect your engine will sound like a tractor.

As others have suggested compare it to another superb, but not an octavia as they are non PD engined.

It has been suggested that PD engines are noisier than previous generation TDI engines and that this is down to the unit injector system pressures. However refinement can differ greatly between different VAG group vehicles, even though its the same engine.

I have found that my PD (100) engine in my Fabia has loosened up ( now at 13500miles) and is less gruff than when new. This is the same basic engine as yours.

My Fabia doesnt like supermarket fuel. Elf is the favourite (its much smoother on this and performance is better) I also use dieselclean fuel additive which seems to give smoother running as well.

Check out the all the plastics areas round the Air Filter housing for vibration and or loose parts as this can create one hell of a noise under acceleration.

Hello.

The 155 hp Diesel is no PD therefore is much less noisy compared to the 130. The advantage of the 130 is of course the lower fuel consumption.

For the last 220.000 km I drove an Audi A4 1.9 TDI (90 hp). Very nice car - but I have enough of the typical 4-cylinder-vibrations!! I remembered my 324 td touring (115 hp 6-cylinder), tested the V6 Diesel-Superb - and ordered it.

Wele
