Snow & salt or ESP fubars my 4x4 brakes ?

Featured Replies

I now appear to have a warped front disc after my 'moments' on the M1 when the ESP on my 4x4 decided that it was controlling the car in the rutted snow rather than me.

Armfuls of opposite lock later (at 35-40mph) I disagreed and switched off my blind-folded ESP autopilot. I half expected a HAL 2001 style voice to ask me to re-consider ...

Anyway, the car sat for 3 days afterwards and one or more disc has sinc ehad all the symptoms of being warped. I washed the brakes off and then have worn them back in gradually but with no success.

Questions if you can help ?

1) Was it the ESP going absolutely ballistic on the brakes that did it, or the fact it was parked up with salt on that's stuffed them ? Never had this problem before and its a not exactly coincidential

2) Can you remind me the recommended 4x4 part no.s / approx price for :-

- Skoda (or better) front discs

- Pagid or Ferrodo (DS2500?) front pads

- The recommended, better brake fluid

Finally - is Sejoc now the chosen supplier as I'm assuming that Impreziv have gone by the wayside ?

Thanks all

I don't know, but they seem to have problems with 4x4 discs - they've had my money for four weeks .....

Are you upgrading your brakes Simon or just fitting a different make but the same size etc ?

EBC grooved discs at the front (when they arrive  ), DS2500 pads all 'round, Slikolene fluid. After discussion with "them in the know", I think that this is all that needs doing for moderate track use with plenty in reserve for normal roads.

Rob,

you just missed out on a GB for the Ferrodo DS2500 pads....

EBC grooved I assume?

Yep, that's right. AFAIK, EBC discs grooved (or drilled / whatever you want) by Sejoc. I'm still trying to get used to paying more money for less metal :)

Indeed they did; Friday 20th Feb. (Ordered 13th Jan). Also, as you have a 4x4 make absolutely sure that they realise the 4x4 uses different sized discs to the vRS.

Just a quick mention here, Yes it probably was your ESP going mental in the snow....

Snow is a killer for ABS and ESP systems. If you build up a wedge of snow under a wheel it will slide along the road due to the icy nature however the cars system believes the wheel has locked as its not going around, consequently it will start slowing power to other wheels and its a vicious circle!

A vicious circle is pretty much what I had to prevent going into ! ;)

The ESP seems to over-ride the 4x4 system in the pecking order. On the recommendation of Tavia4x4 and Jabbasport, I have been trying the car with ESP off. I now do not get any wheelspin or 'tales of the unexpected'.

Conclusion if you have a 4x4, ESP just gets in the way. :(
