Steering wobble/play & looseness at low speeds - any ideas?

Featured Replies

As title really.. feels like this at the straight ahead position and may be 1-2cms of play.

Only happens/noticebale at low speeds - have asked dealer to look at 50k service but they said they couldnt find anything.

Could this be steering bushes of some sort? Anyone else had this?

Thanks in advance. :)

possibly a tyre or wheel problem , i get this at work sometimes when the tyre is deformed/badly worn or the rim is bent , but would expect bad vibration at speed if this was the case though

Forgot to say, there is a small amount of play if i wiggle the steering wheel when car is stopped too - its just more noticeable when on the move.

C'mon people - nobody able to give me any more help?

Anybody else had anything like this as there must be plenty of vRSs around with similar mileage (55k)

My "gut" feeling is worn bushes of some sort, but it also feels my old pug was when the PAS belt was slipping.

Need to book car in for its 1st MOT so will ask dealer to look at again.

Hoping its not going to be expensive to fix now the warranty has finished. :(

I've got an '05 plate with approx. 50k on the clock and have the same.

I do also have a very strong 'short' vibration (not shudder) through the steering wheel at all speeds - firstly getting the wheels checked...but it feels different somehow.

I also thought bushes/ bearing/ 'hopefully nothing expensive'......

Will let you know if I get any feedback on this from tyre place/ dealer.

Yes hoping hear nothing expensive - its really starting to annoy me now and need to get it sorted!

Cant report any vibrations, just the lightness/looseness at the straight ahead steering wheel position.

I too have this issue I believe, (2002 model 16v) However it did`nt until it came back from a series of repairs to what feels like most of the rest the car. Its still dreadful to drive and th RAC "condemned" it. unservicable on road test due to "misalignment of steering wheel, and also tracking. ( which has been tried many times with varying degrees of results leading to new 2 new wheels ) However as most of the rest of the car has broken down at sometime or other so I reckon the steering is the last straw for mine......
