1.9 SDI tuning

Featured Replies

I would recommend not using the SDi for overtaking it isnt really designed for that its a very very slow car so overtaking = spending a lot of time on the worng side of the road

   :sofahide:

You are fine overtaking in an N/A diesel, you just have to look ahead and plan when to do it, and if the other person speeds up you have to know when to back off :)

  • It cost an extra tenner to get my smart covered, it went from 44hp to 85hp with 140Nm AND the 135kph speed limiter was removed. This was with LVFS who are not as anal as some insurers about mods.

Apologies for breathing life into this thread ....

I spoke to a mate who had remapped his sdi Golf to 90hp and was VERY happy with the results.

Has anyone on these pages tried the 90hp sdi remap?

With serious sdi bargains available this remap would make these tough little cars more attractive for anyone on a budget?

26bhp more on a sdi with a remap!!

lol someone is pulling his leg!

Thanks for your help guys.

It looks like the SDI is the one for me, good mpg and no turbo to go wrong.

I Just thought that might be tweekable.

still it must go ok quite a big engine for a little car,

and I can only wonder what 170bhp TDI would be like in a furbie AWESOME.

I currently drive a 205 Diesel 1.8 non turbo that shifts ok.

My thoughts:

1.

Turbo to go wrong
?? Not very often

Awesome.....Correct!

3.

Are you sure you want to use the word "shifts" ??;)

Good luck

At work i drive an '01 VW caddy with a 1.9SDi engine and while its not that fast compared to the pd 100TDi in my fabia its still quick enough but suspect thats cos its a van and weighs not as much as a car

From what I recall a remap for an SDI took it up to around 75bhp.

I think it would be worth looking into as I think it would not cost as much as a PD130bhp to remap - I reckon you could get it done for £150-£200.

Also, in the letter I referred to in Diesel Car eariler in the thread the writer stressed that the way the 'power' was delivered across the rev range was much improved making the car a lot more drivable.

At the end of the day if you want to do it go for it, I think it would be worth a shot.

The word from the remapper I spoke to was 90hp not 75hp ... the 15hp in question would make or break the car in my opinion. 75hp wouldn't pull the **** off a chocolate mouse ... but 90hp?

I've got no will power whatsoever, and I'll do silly speeds (your honour) if the motor is capable of silly speeds ... perhaps I need an sdi to keep my licence intact?

My thoughts on the SDI. Great motor and not much to go wrong. 60+ MPG easily achievable on long journeys. Nice comphy ride. Holds it`s own on the motorways 80MPH = 3,000 RPm so it` not laboured at all. Will prove everybody wrong in the long run.

10,000 service intervals. Easy DIY job. Great engine, but not for accelaration.

you never ever gona get anywhere near 90bhp with just a remap on a sdi!

i have to aggree with mouse. I call my mums the tank because once you have it rolling there is no stopping it up and down hill on the motorway @ 80. just the 0-60 is nothing to write home about. great car that will take some real stick!

Stock bhp of a fabia sdi is 64bhp, look it up! mine rolling roaded at 64.4bhp so custom code obviously dont have a clue

Looks like they got their figures from the new 2.0 sdi, and according to them, to remap that they are looking at £400 + VAT

Hi I've just had the misfortune of driving an 56 reg caddy SDi this weekend and the conclusion drawn is why the hell is this engine still in production?. Surely a Tdi cannot be that much more expensive to buy and put into the dam thing. I've had more poke going up hill on a bike being pulled by a tortoise. :thumbdwn:

It's all relative though ... my PD100 feels absurdly slow after getting out of our remapped Golf 130.

Stepping from my mothers 1.3 Yaris into the PD100 is like stepping into a rocket.

I'd still fancy an sdi for commuting if the opportunity arose ...

you would been driving the new touran based caddy and not the older model caddy i drive(same van as the seat inca)

we can remap the SDi they are much better once done, sharpens them up and gains about 20 bhp

The SDI's an absolute dog. Avoid at all costs. Slower & not as economical as a 1.4tdi, noisier than Godzilla, less torque than most small petrols & utterly, utterly undriveable. :thumbdwn:

Get the 1.4tdi

JMTPW.

Yea, agreed but the last time I checked out Autotrader the sdi was a clear grand cheaper than a 1.4tdi (and I think that engine's a dog too).

I still maintain that as cheap transport the sdi is relevant, and with a remap it's not such a daft choice

I'd like to try one before and after a remap and report back, I'm not just into peak bhp I prefer my cars to be drivable in all conditions - ChippedUK have just modified their 'nutter-ba5tard' 180hp remap on our PD130 to make my missus happy, and it's now a very smooth refined and still quick motor.

Don't forget that an SDI remapped will have increased insurance as it is now a modified car. This may offset any saving s you make, but that is down to each insurance company.

Yep spot on on the sizes, but PSA classed them as 1700's :)

Depending on the car you could get a 1700 & 1900 N/A, a 1700 & 1900 charge-cooled engine and a 2.1 charge-cooled engine.

Oh for a 2.1 in a BX, that would definitely have gone some ;)

The 1.7 TZD turbo was a rapid enough beast :):)

How much we talking?

Stuart, just for info and to give you some idea ... the ChippedUK remap of my girlfriends' PD130 Golf was £250+vat. I can't see any reason why it should be more expensive than that.

Amazing how you can get an extra 20bhp from a non turbocharged engine by a remap. Either the SDi is heavily de-tuned as standard or those figures are a little optimistic.

I've OBDI chipped 2x N/A cars before (both petrol) and only seen tiny gains of about 5-6 bhp.

Makes them nicer to drive and a bit more 'peppy' but nothing out of this world. It just 'sharpens them up' as you say.
