calling Diesel VRS owners - MPG in traffic ?

Featured Replies

Following an incidient in my Petrol VRS octy II I found myself in a local Skoda dealership today and got round to thinking about the possibility of an oil burning VRS, particualry as superchips are now claiming 209 BHP.

In a nutshell my wife drives the car monday to friday and usually sits in nose to tail traffic to and from work, averaging around 20 ish mpg. When we use the car at the weekends I average late 20's to mid 30's MPG which is decent for the performance on offer.

Realistically what 'real world' mpg could I expect from the Diesel VRS in heavy stop start traffic ?

Cheers guys :)

I would think about the particle filter issue if it will be used in stop start traffic.

These DPF's are ceratinly becoming a worry for short journey drivers.

well my daily journey to work is 2.2 miles and 2.2 miles home

both in heavy stop start traffic ....weekends I usually give it blast

for about 20 miles to clear the system I fill the tank once a month

which is average 330 miles over 20 months I have average 37mpg

next month I will be making a trip to Powys about 380 mile round trip......

hopefully if I can control my right foot .... I will do it on 1 tank full

In mine which now has just over 5000 miles on the clock in stop start traffic it gets about 37 mpg, i've not been stuck in much though thankfully to take proper notice, on my normal work journey, a 53 mile M1/A50 journey at about 80/85mph, it returns a religous 46/47 mpg, that's with booting it a few times as well because you just can't help it.

On shorter journeys of about 10 or so miles over xmas it was hovering around the 40mpg mark.

It's mpg will still be better in traffic than the petrol version which ever way you look at it.

I took a TDI vRS on a 25 mile test drive on brisk B roads and dual carridgeway; the salesman with me (who insisted that for insurance he had to chaparone me) suggested I set the trip mpg reading on the computer. ;)

Driving BRISKLY, enjoying full throttle where possible, :D not getting into higher than 4th gear on the B roads and I was in the 75 - 90mph range on the dual carridgeway I finished up with around 38.5mpg.

This I reckon has got to be a good bottom line and 40+ mpg has got to be a realistic prospect. Remember also that a TDI will be MUCH more economical in traffic than a TSFI.

PS> I too had spotted that Superchips will get the PD 170 to 209bhp AND 300 ft lb of torque; plus they give a full Warranty so no qualms about getting a new vRS TDI remapped with them. :D:thumbup:

With 1500 miles on the clock I'm getting about 35mpg in really heavy stop/start traffic. If the traffic is a little more free flowing that goes up to 37mpg. Not brilliant but about 15mpg better than I usd to get from a Mk1 vRS in the same traffic conditions. On a steady run it goes up in to the high 40's.

10'000 miles on clock on a golf GT TDI (same engine different car, but should give a good estimate)

- 45-50 on a good m/way run

- 42-47 on average around town run

- 37-43 sat in traffic on m/way etc

- 18 I pressed the loud peddle and the engine started to growl, i like the note so much i kept pressing it ;)

Cheers guy's,

So realistically, about 15 - 17 mpg more in stop start then ! quite a difference.

But based on around 6 - 8 miles a day round trip monday to friday, probably not worth changing, particularly with the DPF issues. I think in reality it would take ages to pay for itself unless we started to do higher mileage.

Probably agree with you to be honest, I would just hold onto your one and review it when you come to change next. No point taking two hits on new cars.

I did a 100 mile journey from Norfolk to West London today & got 40+mpg on the way there in very heavy traffic for the second part of the journey & still managed 40+mpg. On the way back home in clear traffic I got 55mpg without any intention of saving fuel! My car also has a power box from East Coast racing & an uprated air filter & I found that this had no effect on the fuel useage.

There were plenty of occassions where I smoked (literally!!) bigger & 'better' (ahermmm!) cars today too.

60 mpg is achievable but life gets boring.

There's nothing better than smoking most brands of car off roundabouts & bends & while I'm acheiving 50+mpg they're all left in my wake wondering 'what the hell was that & where do I get one' ha ha

I think he is talking about the new octy VRS with a PD170 fitted and not the furby VRS. It sounds like you are talking about the furby from those figures.

There is no way you will get an easy 55/60 out of the Octy VRS PD170, as you ahve to try pretty hard to get 50mpg+ IMHO.

Yeah i would say those figures must be for the furby.

Strangely when i cruise on the motorway at 80/85 i get about 47mpg, the other day i took it steady and stuck to 70 as much as i could and it returned 44mpg, what would explain that? :really:
