ok prob is this, i have said vehicle in w/shop with a lot of bent valves (bottom pulley come undone on m/way). 2q's q no1. do you know if i would need to replace anything in the timming chain/sprocket assembly ie any thrust washers etc. that might have got damaged?. 2. as this is a common rail engine do i have to set the high speed/injector pump timming up, as all the manuals i have don't make sense and don't look like the pump i have. hope this makes sense, any help would be much appreciated cheers K.

I dont "think" the TDCI needs ignition timing set up with a belt change, unlike the TDDI which definitely does.

not an common fault ,but we've done one in the workshop , same fault , had a new engine fitted , as it had only been driven onto the train in Belgium and off at the railhead at Speke

first off check the end of the crank for damage where the pulley sits and the thread in the end of the crank ,if either of these are damaged especially the thread it prob going to need an engine

the valves will be bent period , remove rocker cover check for cam caps cracked , if they are , it will require a new head , you maybe lucky and just have a cam in 5 bits but it usually takes the caps as well

as the pump is chain driven , the timing between that and the crank will be ok but as the bottom pulley has come off this timing will not be right as the lower sprocket will have spun on the crank

the pump to cam timing will be ok , but as you'll be stripping the head off any way in a best case scenario you will need to have the usual crank/cam locking tools to time it up

new fuel pressure pipes should be fitted , and make sure no ****e gets in the common rail bits

i think it will need an engine (kerching ) is it not under warranty ? HTH

yeh thanks for that ric, yes 5 valves have been bent no damage to the cam or caps, i have made up tools for locking up cam and crank, the only thing i was worried about was if there was a setting for crank to pump timming, as it's a common rail system i was under the belive that it's irrelavant as the pump only has one pipe comming out feeding the fuel pipe manifold (unlike conventional pumps with 4 pipes, one for each cyl in which case these need to be timmed to crank+cam. btw it's a 02 reg so way out of warranty. cheers for the info. as the pump to crank timing is chain driven, the relationship between the 2 sprockets will be the same , but because the crank pulley bolt has come loose this has allowed the crank to spin freely of the sprocket , therefore the crank will need setting correctly with the locking pin , then turn the pump sprocket to turn the chain and lower sprocket and relocate it on the crank , iirc there should be a pin/locating dowel on the crank so the sprocket is locked in position , this may of snapped off when the pulley fell off , this must be there , so check ASAP , much dismantling may be required if its been snapped off

and as i said previously , if the crank is damaged , you might as well get an engine
