Smoking Diesel Felicia

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!!

I

Hi There :)

What colour is the smoke?

When you say were being changed do you mean that the filters have all been changed?

If so I would look at checking the MAF if your car has one, although I am not sure that yours does.

Is it a 1.9 SDI or TDI, I assume SDI.

Also what do you call excessive smoke, I mean can you see a thick black cloud following you, during the day etc etc?

Another question is what fuel are you using, and did they use the right oil for the oil change.

i thinck the problem is in the question.

you drive an oil burner :D

sorry couldnt resist.

The colour of the smoke is black and is quit visable during the day. I had a friend follow behind to confirm the amount and colour of the smoke.

All the filters, oil ect were changed just befour Christmass. The car has the SDI engine, 64hp.

About the oil, i will have to trust the lochal mechanic that he used the correct grade.

The MAF, i dont think it has one, but could be proven wrong!

Should i leave it until its an MOT issue?

Yes it is an oil burner but i had a Volvo 850 befour and it was a **** artist on petrol so diesel Felicia:thumbup:

nah, the felicia diesel doesn't have a MAF mark.... it has a load sensor on the injection pump....

has your timing belt been changed recently?? have you had a new injection pump fitted??

if it is really smokey i would suggest the first place you look is that the injection pump timing is right, firstly on the timing belt, then the pump itself, often the bolt holding the vernier adjuster starts to slip and the pump goes out of time

Yes the timing belt was changed as part of deal to buy the car, have looked at it and its new but "dont think he changed the tensioner, pulleys as well"

Never checked the timing on a car befour! How do i do it......and is it easy?

Thanks Brian

Hmm If it is an old style derv, then I'd definitely look at the injection timing as Tom says. It used to be a known trick to advance it very slightly to get a bigger kick on some old school TDs but that led to more smoke.

If you are not familiar with the engine, I would probably get a diesel injection specialist to give the system a once over and check the timing at the same time.

Am considering handing it over to an expert!

Would i be right in saying the injection pump is a 2 stage, 1 being maintaing speed, while 2 "pressing hard" accelerat quicker.

When driving it is difficult to maintain the speed without going to stage 2. So maybe going from stage 1 to 2 often may explane the smoke:confused:

Erm not quite sure what you are getting at there by stage 1 and 2.

It does sound from what you are saying though that you are over fueling.

If the car has a temperature sensor and ECU rather than purely mechanical injection then it might be worth having the temp sensor checked and replaced.

Personally I'd throw it at a derv injection specialist that isn't too pricey.

I will give the job to a specialist and i will post the results the problem is cured.

Thank you all for your help:thumbup:

normally only tractors and boats and other stuff have staged injection pumps, car ones are much more linear.... i suggest buying a haynes manual, but setting the basic timing of the injection pump isn't a diy job, it requires dial gauges etc...... go to a diesel specialist
