Front Brakes

A couple of questions about my front brakes

I need to replace both pads and disc's - got the FS-III Calipers, and 280mm discs. I'm told I need an hex key to undo the caliper bolts - anyone know what size?

Also apart from German and Swedish anyone know any good places to get the parts from? I'm in warwickshire, not interested in uprating the brakes or anything just after like for like.

7mm hex/allen key to undo the sliders.

GSF are good, as are Euro carparts and most local motor factors if you dont want genuine.

Got my 3/8 drive hex key from Halfords and my pads and disks from GSF, pretty easy job.

A mate told me to make sure to clean (wire wheel on drill) the face where the new disc fits on to ensure its fits proper because if you do not it could cause it to warp.

Worked for me.

I doubt that not cleaning the hub would warp a disc, but you'd be surprised just how little mis-alignment you need to induce in order to cause all sorts of brake problems (vibration, long pedal being the most likely), so Nic's mate was doing the right thing, but for the wrong reason. Also a wire wheel isn't necessary, a manual wire brushing will do just as well.

Thanks for the replies, couple of other questions

Am slightly confused as have read else where on this forum that I'm unlikely to have the 280mm front discs as Skoda/VW haven't used them for sometime. Thoughtly they're the size that the haynes manual (ok I know they arn't always correct) recon.

Secondly - apart from GSF where else is a good sorce to get parts from.

Car is 1999 Skoda Octavia GLX Estate 1.9 TDi (90bhp) - which I believe gives me a engine code of AGR.

Cheers

Dave

A 2003 TDI 110 Elegance used the FSIII 280mm discs so I would be fairly sure you will have them.

You can read FS-III on the front calipers too.

Euro carparts are ok too, but I used GSF, and it was just shy of £150 all in for discs and pads for all 4 wheels.

Can't remember which, but I've had either either GSF or ECP catalogues quoting the VAG OEM brands (just not in boxes with the brand name overprints).
