This is an easy choice - if you view a car as merely a domestic appliance, and you want the most reliable, then it's the ugly toyota. If you like to drive and see car as emotionally distinct from say, a tumble dryer, then it's the Skoda.

I don't think there's much more to say about either car in terms of features, economy, resale value and so on - we'd need to know a bit more about your interests to make a recommendation.

If I was on a comparable budget (to a 1.6 Skoda) I'd consider a slightly smaller car with a bit more go or a few more toys (unless you have to have the cabin space). I'm trying to say there are no medium saloons with 1.6 engines that are special - you may as well toss a coin.

Octavia diesels are in fact a 1.9 TDI (105 bhp) and 2.0 TDI (140 bhp) - both great cars in there own right.

He's possibly referring to the Toyota diesel engines which do come in 2.0 (130bhp) and 2.2 (150 and 180 bhp) versions.

They're probably even more nasty than the VW units, but at least, like the VRs you get particle filters on the 2.2's.

Either way the Toyota is probably more reliable so long as you don't care about looking like you had to drive your car because you forgot where you left your bus pass.

i took a toyota 2.0 tdi out for a test drive when it looked like we were going to get them as company cars. compared to the Focus 1.8 tdi and the skoda 2.0 tdi i had/have it was completely gutless. something to bear in mind if this comes into it for you
