The new Fabia will have the option of a particulate filter on the 1.4 and 1.9 diesels. Are these available for current diesels (including the VRS) and, if so, has anybody fitted one?

They wont be a retro fit item, its a intergral part of the exhaust and has extra sensors and ECU programming for it.

Plus I dont think one wil physically fit on the Fabia MK1.

I asked about this a long time ago, and the answer was the same then too.

In addition it will probably cause a fair bit of powerloss or restrict remap potential significantly if you were after one of those.

TBH if you allow the turbo to spool up before booting it hard, generally drive with a fairly controlled right foot, but give it some beans every once in a while, you probably get the least soot output.

This does not help me at the moment, 'cos I drive a 2.0i. But if I could reduce the emissions and noise of a diesel, I would be interested. So a limited edition, end of line, VRS might fit the bill if a filter were available and with the noise reduction mod mentioned in this forum.

Another point: I am not sure that soot = particulates. I thought that soot was unburnt fuel whereas particulates were the very fine solids resulting from diesel combustion.

Must admit that system fitted to the Superb makes this look like childsplay.

The system on the Octavia is just as complicated in its operation, its just self regenerating.

Particulates are an irritant to the growing number of asthmatics, and I suspect they don't do much good to the more healthy of us either.

You don't really want to know that

soot = particulates , doesn't it , basically the soot is burnt in the diesel catalyst , then is deposited out the exhaust as ash

the more things that are added to a diesel engine for the emissions means more and more things to go wrong , isn't the Octy 2 VRS having DPF problems , i know some Fords are having problems , plus we have to top up a little reservoir in the fuel tank to make the DPF work , the special fluid is expensive

This is needed as the location of the filter means it doesnt get hot enough to burn the soot off on its cycle.

I asked with my dealer about this. He advised me to check with Skoda UK Customer Services for the best information, but he thinks it is probably a suitable retrofit for older VRSs with the ASZ engine which meets Euro 3. The later VRSs since 18 months ago (BLT engines) meet Euro 4 and would probably not be suitable for this filter.

I don't know if the effects of this particulate filter equate to the difference between Euro 3 and Euro 4. Anybody got any idea about this?

From personal experience on the Superb I would avoid it like the plague. I totally see the point regarding being nice to the enviroment but when you are limping to the garage because the **** filter has failed to regenerate & then the car spends a week there whilst they sort it out it tends to damped your enthusiasm for the enviroment. Im guessing it might also be expensive, the filter alone on the Superb is rumoured to be £600.

DPF's are getting bad press on cars from VAG, Renault & a few others as well so you might reduce the secondhand value of the car as well.

One person who contacted me about an Audi he had with a dpf had 25 warning lights in 6 months & that included several limps to the dealer & 4 tows to the dealer. Audi unlike skoda who dont give a duck were offering to replace the car with another model with the diesel V6 at no charge (V6 didnt have a dpf)

Another downside to DPF's is they cant handle bio diesel & also reduce the mpg

I view it as new technology which hopefully in a couple of years they will refine to a point where it works a lot more reliably. At present they are trying to make existing engine designs comply, as the new purpose designed power plants come on stream things will get better

Ross any ideas how to get rid of the ferkin thing yet. I need something in place for when the warranty runs out

DPFs arn't that new. My Dad's C5 has one and it's an 02 plate.
