starting problem in cold VRS

Featured Replies

Anyone had this problem?

Last few time the temp has dropped, especially the other day when it went down to -5c the car made a hard time of starting, the starter motor turning over without a spark, then the car starts.

In normal conditions it starts fine, so its not a battery problem. Anyone had any similar issues? I'm taking it in to the garage on Saturday, but thought things would move allong more quickly if i had an idea of the fault.

Cheers:)

How long are you talking about when you say the starter motor winds but no spark...............and approx how many turns.

It takes about 8 turns apposed to two normally - the garage over the phone mentioned a temp sensor?

Cold temperature will effect the battery, and it might be worth checking the cells have enough water in them, and sticking a charger on it overnight.

Cold temperature will effect the battery

That would be affect the battery. Sorry cheezy no offence intended but nowadays this is a common mistake that I find irksome :o .

As far as the problem is concerned my car has not shown any reluctance to start despite having been out in the elements the past two nights. Starting is almost instantaneous. Both the sensor and battery possibilities make sense but the condition of the battery is the easier of the two to check first.

They couldnt find a problem - typical - cleaned some relays and thats it. Looks like i will have to find the problem myself!

In my experience it takes a couple of more turns than normal to start the Octy VRS...........don't know if this affects every one but i do know another owner who made the same comment when he got his in September.........i may be in a position to measure this against another car within the VAG range with the same engine in a couple of weeks.........:D

No problems even at -25, -30. This kind of temps are quite common here in Finland this time of the year.
