Slight tweak = more fun

At the end of November I had a little more camber added to the front of the Octavia. I haddnt posted on here until now because I wanted the tyres to get used to running in this manner before I posted my opinions.

Understeer on the Octavia has always been something that has been a bit of a problem. I believe its a problem shared with the Golf on the same platform and it was a Golf driver who suggested I added some more camber.

During general driving around town you dont notice any difference, nor do you notice anything on a winding B-road.

However, where you do really feel the difference is on tight bends below 40mph, roundabouts and tight bends on sliproads etc.

The understeer has been reduced dramatically in these corners - you can feel the car is heaving on the tyres a little more rather than just pushing them away.

The drawback is that the rear end feels a little light at times, almost as if it is trying its best to lift the inside rear wheel - i suspect thats because it is.

I'm running the standard Elegance ARB at the front. I've looked at the uprated version but at

If the back end is going light, give it some more throttle to shift weight towards the rear and increase grip :D

I tired that but sometimes its just not appropriate and when it is, it feels a little unstable.

I see where you're coming from and when I had the Z I got used to doing what seemed the "wrong" thing and applying more power.

So how do you alter the camber?

As far as I know its fixed unless modified bottom arms were fitted.

And was camber added or subtracted?

 Thats just what i was thinking Ross:rolleyes:

So come on Phil enlighten us in the know :P

Is this not as simple as fitting some shims?

Where to fit the shims though?

The bottom ball joint is fixed on the lower wishbone, the strut slots into the hub and is secured tight cant be moved into a different position and the top mount isnt bolts to the body as such.

As I said above, I have no idea what is/was done.

All I can say is that my previously almost new, perfectly evenly worn tyres now have a very distinct increase in wear from the inside edge out. This is the case on both of my front wheels and those on my colleagues GTI.

So if its not possible, why the change in driving feel and the increase in wear on the inner edge of the tyres on both cars?

Placebo.

The front camber isnt adjustable.

Wear from inside out can be due to incorrect toe.

If they had given you negative camber the tyre wear would now be greater on the inside edge.

i've seen people using adjustable top mounts on the mk4 golf before when they have stupidly low coilovers fitted?? but they are really expensive!!

i allways liked to increase the negative camber on the rear wheels on my polo's by sticking in a hacksaw blade under the stud axles at the bottom, it works a treat too!

:P Sounds like you have had a "toe" job Phil.........
