Insurance - tracking someone down.

Featured Replies

Hi.. bit of a long shot this...

I was recently in a accident earlier in the week.. the other party admitted blame and gave me his details.. i wrote down his numberplate..

So the details i have for him are:

A Name

A mobile number

His insurance company (liverpool victoria).

A registration + type of car

Now then, its not going to cost much to get my car fixed (couple of hundred from a good bodyshop i know) (minor dent on wing+scuffed door) so if this can be done without involving insurance.

Anyhooz.. try to phone the guy today.. (only tried once so far) but the phone is going thru to voicemail for a person that isnt him

there could be a genuine reason for this.. ill try again tonight and then leave a message..

but worst case... what do i do now?

I can report it to the police, but what will they be able to do, and wouldnt that mean ill have to go thru insurance? (which im trying to avoid for ovbious reasons)

Any way i can get ownership details off his numberplate?, or would LV insurance even talk to me if i give them the details i know?

the problem is, if theres any way the blame can be shifted to have something to do with me, then i dont want to go thru insurance for a 250quid repair.. id rather get it fixed myself!

Col,

I'm guessing you don't have an address, but how many people with his name live in the area?

Have you tried a BT directory enquiry search if you know the town he lives in?

Or a 192.com search

Same happened to me back in November. Woman hit the rear of the car I was driving not alot of damage and she agreed to pay for the damge.

Tried to call her but the number turned out to be a fake one for an old peoples home.

Went through the insurance companyin the end as it was her fault and her NCB would be lost not mine. Not really the answer you want though.

The police will probably not be bothered and I think you have to report it within the first 24 hours.

You could tried calling his insurance company and explain what happened and she if they could get a message to him, but with data protection and alike they might not help.

To be honest if you cant get the person and you dont want to go through the insurance it looks like you will have to pay for it yourself. I've only once be successful in getting someone to pay for the damaged they caused to my car and that was because I wanted it to go through the iinsurance company and she didn't (one more claim and she wouldn't get re-insured)

Your insurance company might be able to give you some advice, admiral was very helpful.

Well, if you've got a numberplate then there will be an address associated with it on a database somewhere at the DVLA - so it's just a matter of getting the information off this database...

Know any coppers who'd be willing to be a tad unethical for your benefit? :)

Rob.

Hmm. If you mention anything to your insurance company (or his) they it should be then recorded. So even if you claim or not I think you have to inform future insurance companies so they can increase your premium. :thumbdwn:

The solicitors was able to get the detials of the owner of the car that crashed into me a while back. Dont know how they did it but they did.

You could go to the police but I found it took a year before they got back to me. Only to say they couldnt trace the car. So much for the fancy tax law. :thumbdwn:

ive found one address on 192.com that might be the perp, altho from where he lives i dont know why he would use the route he did to get to the motorway..

ill try phoning again tonight and leave a message, and maybe drive past the house for a looksies

otherwise its looking like a waste of time

After my experience of insurance claims last year my advice is if that you can afford to get it done your self just cough up, regardless of fault.

The hassels I had a) to get the work done and B) retain my no claims and get my excess back, far out weighed what would have been the cost of getting the damage sorted and paid for by myself :(

To be honest after the experience the only advantage of having that insurance certificate is so you can get your car taxed

I agree. With my uninsured driver because I never had full comp (thats another story) I had to pay for repairs myself untill I claimed some it back from the MIB. But I also have to pay around

Sorry to :bump: this thread now but did you ever get a result from this Neo?

Reason I ask is I've just discovered the phone number given to me the other night is wrong, although I think that's more to do with her friend being a bit dippy.

To say I'm hopping mad would be an understatement  , I've now got 3 lots of forms to fill in (2 for me and one for wife) even though at this stage I didn't want to claim as it's less than my excess anyway (only just though).

Really wanted to speak to the woman involved to see if she's actually going to try and claim from me  , all I can get from insurance companies is "there is a claim being submitted" but don't know if this means she's just logged it the same as I have or if she really is dumb enough to think it's my fault when I was as far left as could be and she was in the middle of the flipping road!!!

Was hoping to look at a remap next year but if I have to declare an accident then that'll probably go out the window :( .

Looks like I'll be submitting photos, sketches and long winded reports back now - anyone have any advice what I can still claim back from her (if it comes to it) even though the repairs on my car should be complete tomorrow?

I know it's an old post, but for a non-injury, damage only accident then you just need to exchange details in general - police wont get involved (other than giving advice on that and securing the scene to [try to] prevent further accidents) unless somebody is refusing to give their details or similar. The 24 hour rule is "as soon as possible but in any case within 24 hours" and is basically for where theres nobody there to exchange your details with - if you crash into somebodys garden wall ad theyre not in to explain it, for example

I Know its a lot to think of when you have just had an accident but if you are given a phone number at the scene RING IT while they are still there and see if their phone rings or if its a land line do they know this person.

If you dont get the correct result call the police and say you believe the other driver is uninsured and you want an officer to check it out!
