What the heck is a VT5 turbo anyway?

Featured Replies

I've been following the exploits of several members who are upgrading their turbos.

The thing is that I can find the garrett specs for the VNT-17, VNT-20 but the the "vt5" seems to be a non-conventional model name.

Anyone know what the corresponding Garrett/turbodynamics model no. or even specs are?

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks time all being well. ;)

VT5 is an "Allards" hybrid, not Turbodynamics.

I suspect internally, the VT5 is similar to a TD, stage 2 turbo, but they've obviously done something more serious to it, else they don't need to modify the connections for the exhaust and the "to the intercooler" outlet. :) I'm particularly interested in the exhaust outlet being bigger as I've always wondered on my VT2, that the outlet the downpipe bolts to is relatively small diameter at aorund 1.5" or less - perhaps that is sufficient to a point, then for better exhaust flow, a bigger outlet is needed, and hence why I need a new big bore downpipe to be manufactured to match the VT5 outlet. :)

What boost will it run when installed?

now out on a limb: I have a feeling that the VT5 is a larger framed garrett VNT turbo, and built to handle extra load.

What I keep hearing is that it can flow more air at the same boost level without any overboost spikes, as even the smaller (!!?) VT20 can run unsafe boost if so set up. The turbo lag would probably bit a tiny bit more with the VT5, as it's a bigger turbo so maybe less low end torque????...

I wonder if it's not the uprated injectors that do the magic and the VT5 just provides a tiny bit extra airflow to raise hp by 15-20bhp near the redline? If that is the case, uprated injectors plus a VNT20 are probably the daily driver's ultimate setup (as WW is doing at present).

Just trying to understand the slipery slope near the bottom where it gets a little unclear unlike the very beginnings where everyone agrees on popular mods....

I'd welcome any comments on my speculations above....

Well, depending on how much fuel I can chuck in, I doubt it will run any higher boost than my VT2 does now - It will just do a much better job of providing air at that boost.
