2.0i Fabia Acceleration

Featured Replies

I know i rattle on about my engine alot but... i clocked it at 8.8sec 0-60 the other day on a couple of runs. is this even right?!?(had never clocked it b4) has the previous owner done something i dont no about to the car? also i find when moving off, if i have high revs the clutch can just slip but only at higher revs eg 4000. is this normal?

I guess it'll depend how you measured the 8.8 seconds - is that indicated speed on the speedo against a stop watch?

And yes, I'd expect clutch slip moving off at 4k rpm

If it felt good, why worry about the figures? You can always start and stop a watch in whatever number of seconds you want, without even getting in a car!

The 2.0i is quite a nippy car, but its best characteristics are smoothness and comfort. The enjoyment of those cannot be marred by measurements.

I've managed >8.7 on a stopwatch husky, over a number of times, depending on road conditions, fuel tank level and dropping the clutch at the right revs to take off. Don't be surprised with that time.

Never timed mine, just upset a few people at the lights.

quite nippy yes, comfortable and smooth no;)

the oe rear springs are far too hard on the 2.0 fabia..

i had mine measured using some funny gps timing gear that straps to the passenger seat, and i was getting 9.6 seconds to 60 with a full tank of fuel:)

and the Fabia vRS is still quicker than the 2.0 :P

Remember that 0-60 and 0-62 are quite a different set of numbers.

Regardless, the 2 litre doesn't have that great an acceleration from 0, though it feels torquey...it's in gear that feels great, from 3.5Krevs upwards.

The 2.0 acceleration isn't great, simply because of torque steer and wheelspin in the first few gears. Once moving, it does go well.

remember speedo is out by 2/3 mph

Uh? I think many drivers - and passengers - would disagree with that! What does anyone else say?

yes, the elegance trim and comfortable ride makes it a nice place to spend your time. The heated seats are my favourite ;)

Nicely done :)

True there can be considerable wheel spin and torque steer and can be a pain at times but when you manage to tame the beast with the traction control off its a fantastic 0-60 runner :) the large rev range is fantastic 0 - 60 in 2 gears, what a genious idea!!

Yes we know. :p

I have found my engine has a sweet tooth for expensive oil!! has anyone else found it to be a guzzler?

I don't know about Tom's car, but mine used to be smooth and comfortable too. A little too soft for a hatch, but I slightly agree with him about the rear OEM springs. Then again I think that's because of all the weight the front springs have to handle in the front.

Now my car rides like a rock it's not even funny.

True that.

Too much of a guzzler, it's quite annoying. I just recently had mine refilled!

if i forget to check it for a while it ends up way off the end of the dipstick :( oops!

a quick question for all 2.0 owners out there. what did you do to your car first and what would you suggest as the first thing to do?

ok was 2 questions ;)

i got a strut brace:) and some 16" alloys to STILL go on! i have 2 tyres just need another 3 to get:P but she does like the car juice, engine oil and petrol! mines just hit 71k! only in december 05 i bought it on 41k! no real problem other than the steering sensor:)

cant really comment on noticing the suspension is firm at the back, never been a passenger in it! but it grips well:)

The power to weight is 95.83bhp/tonne

Total power 115bhp weight 1200kg.

Official 0-60 is 9.6 seconds

Now lets look at a Honda Civic Type S:-

Total power to weight is 124.21bhp/tonne

Total power 157bhp weight 1264kg

Official 0-60 8.2 Seconds

Now lets look at a hot hatch Renault Clio Sport 172

Total power to weight is 168.46

Total power 172bhp weight 1021kg

Official 0-60 7.1 seconds

Now a current Hot Hatch Astra VXR

Total power to weight is 191.87

Total power 236bhp weight 1230kg

Official 0-60 6.2 Seconds

So taking the above I hope you can see that these cars are ball park Fabia weight with varying degrees of power to increase the 0-60 time of your car you need significant power increases to have any noticable reduction in time.

Based on the fact the Civic Type S gets to 60 in 8.2 seconds using its power to weight as a proxy the Fabia would need 149bhp a significant 30% more than std and in a N/A engine economically unviable. Clearly it would be cheaper to sell the Fabia 2.0ltr and buy a 2nd hand Civic Type S. And the same applies to nearly all cases.

A Bit of an unfair comparison dont you think?

I cant think of hardly any other small hatchbacks that have a large petrol engine and is not a sporting model.

Having said that, 115 BHP is pitiful from an engine of that size

I think we all know why most people buy a fabia and not a buggati veyron... *rolls eyes*

Just a word of caution.

I believe the 2.0 has traction issues, especially in the wet.

Hence I advise you take it easy as maintainence costs will sky rocket due to burning up yours tyres through wheelspin.

Take care out there, be safe.

Also be careful not to snap a driveshaft on the strip ;)

That is probably because that design of engine is aproaching 14 years of age , it made its debut in the mkIII Golf GTi 8V in 1993 IIRC (in Germany at least) , and was rated at 115 BHP even then , so it has changed very little , if at all. It does have a reputation of being hungry on oil , just take a trip through any VAG forum any you will find comments about this 'problem'. The Fabia must be built like a tank tho , as it seems to be a right fat sod compared to other cars of its size!!

Er... No? It weighs less than all the aboved mentioned cars. Apart from the Clio of course. Don't forget, it's a similiar size to a Polo.
