Self servicing, use GSF or OE Skoda

Featured Replies

As above, decided to go self service on mine but fully documenting all work (I have a mate whos a mechanic so itd be wrong to pay the stealers!)

Anyway, what consumables, filters would you use, GSF or OE skoda? The prices for all the bits I need are coming to £17 from GSF (!) or double that for Skoda OE stuff. Any difference in quality?

Im going to use Mobil 1 0w/40 and NGK iridiums.

GSF parts are frequently the real OEM in the OEM box rather than a one.

Is a plug change in the schedule for the service you're going to be doing? A modern engine requires a change much less often than an old one.

Just turned 40k so thought Id do the plugs too. Not too bad a price from sparkplugs.co.uk

GSF sell Mann air filters which are the same as OEM, the oil filters i don't know but if you are not sure I would get the OE skoda one.

IIRC the skoda sparks are multi spark things and I don't think the mobile 1 meets the engine spec but i could be wrong.

If you are still under warrenty use genuine parts and oil which meets the spec, as this would keep your warrenty valid if you ahve it done at a VAT registered garage.

Its an early RS on a Y plate so not under any warranty. I bit the bullet and went for OE parts for peace of mind.

I think the Mobil 1 0w40 meets the fixed service interval?

Dunno about the VAG standard, but Mobil1 was the first oil to even mention the prospect of extended service intervals, which makes me wonder whether not quoting a VAG standard means that ExxonMobil aren't prepared to pay VAG for VAG to do their own testing on the oil?

I think for fixed servicing it states 10/40w semi. Id rather use fully synthetic as the car does a fair few short journeys and is due for a remap soon hence the Mobil 1 idea. Could anyone confirm this is ok for a yearly interval as I want to get it from Costco tomorrow. Cheers.

Is there not a VW whatever in your handbook?

If your handbook say 10/40 semi then the mobile 1 would be fine, except that it is a 0w40 for the proper stuff and about £45 for a 4 litre at halfrauds. No idea how much costco have it for mind.

Sorry I can't be more help.

You can use any oil which meets one of the following specs if on fixed service intervals:

Multigrade high lubricity oils:

VW 500 00

VW 502 00

Multigrade oils:

VW 501 01

Mobil 1 0W-40 has VW 502 00 approval and should be more than good enough.

Thanks guys, dont have my handbook to hand.

Its £23 for 4l in Costco so couldnt argue. Ill grab 2.

I use GSF parts with no hesitation, not had any problems with any parts I've had. As mentioned, most are OE quality parts without the packaging.

If you haven't got the (outrageously priced) iridium plugs yet, then try NGK BKR7E - they are cheap and work as well if not better. The iridium stuff only offers "extended" service intervals, but no functional benefit for the price :)

The plugs werent too bad, about £25 for 4. Think they are one grade colder, BKR6EIX or something...

And by joining Briskoda freedom, you get 10% off at GSF for that year. So you only need spend £120 at GSF on parts (saving £12) to get back your freedom membership.
