had a new rack but symptoms have returned

Featured Replies

A few weeks back I got the steering rack replaced as it was making a grating noise on full lock when turning left slowly. The dealer diagnosed it as the rack. On picking it up there was no noise but noticed that the tracking appeared off. Got the car retracked the following morning and maybe a day or two later noticed the noise had returned.

The noise is like a tyre rubbing similar to when I fitted 18s to my mk4 GTI. I must take off the wheel to investigate but I am sure that it cant be the new rack. Because the tracking was off on picking up the car maybe the tierod was adjusted enough not to cause the tyre to rub?

Any ideas?

Its bad to think they sent the car out with tracking off. I'd assume that should have been checked post Rack replacement.

Did you bring it back to them to correct, were they alright about it ?

It wouldn't be a case that some piping etc behind the wheel ain't seated correctly ?

They bring the car to a third party for tracking so I brought it back to them first thing the following morning and they corrected it.

I vagcom the car at the weekend and have teh following fault:

Address 03: ABS Brakes

Part No SW: 1K0 907 379 AA HW: 1K0 907 379 AA

Component: ESP FRONT MK60 0102

Coding: 0004738

Shop #: WSC 73430

1 Fault Found:

01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500)

008 - Implausible Signal

I tried resetting but it won't.

Maybe the ESP needs centring if that makes sense. Isn't there something that has to be calibrated to it knows where you are pointing and can work out you are not going that way?

This is what you are thinking of.
