1.9 Diesel, 1998, 68K,face lift model.

I have posted this befour, but the problem seems to have got worse!

Smoke! alot of it and its black.

When driving the car getting up to speed 60mph its fine with reasonable output of smoke you would expect from a diesel, but trying to maintain the speed at 60mph it drops 3 to 4mph and the engine starts to flutter gentally/constantly, smoke starts pouring out! To gain back the 3 to 4mph lost i put my right foot down a little and a fog of smoke comes out in a short blast "Bond style!" The overspeed kicks in and it fine until i get to 60mph again and cycle or smoke starts again.

In a couple of weeks time i will have to use the car on 88 mile round trip daily for work and i dont want break down on the M11.

I will be very greatful for and advice!

I like the Felicia very much and DONT want to get rid of it!

Have you changed:

- Air filter

- Fuel Filter

- Oil and Filter

Daft question and this won't make all the difference but have you changed fuels?

Do you have any millers diesel clean/power plus/power sport 4?

If no go and buy some and follow the directions for a double dose of it in your tank. Then check the oil level is up to where it should be and take a good long run out and get the car warm. When it is up to temp give it a good hard drive at high revs, and see if this helps.

Also what about the coolant sensor or thermostat?

Is the car reporting being up to temperature, because if not the ECU (if it has one) will think the car is cold and will over fuel.

Could also get the timing checked as this being out will result in incomplete combustion and so smoke.

my felicia has done 10k less than your car brian and does not smoke fullstop, all i can suggest is getting all your filters changed to see if there is any improvement doesnt sound to healthy eh.

I have brought my car into f Cambridge Injector Service or a pre-inspection. They are a very experienced firm, so will be expecting this issue to be resolved, soon.

They have already came up with a few possible / potential causes of the problem, so I will keep you informed of the progress of the repairs.

I have done it!!

The cause of the excessive smoke was the EGR system in the car. The signal to the vacuum

switch-over solenoid failed to get there. The result was the acceleration was not as linear as it should

To be fair Cambridge Injector Services are very good usually. I've used them several times in the past and have always been very satisfied

The problem is the throttle valve potentiometer in the inj-pump believe me, done many of them (requires new pump) and to be honest just about every felicity diesel i have driven (and that could run into the thousands) do this, including my works pick-up and my mrs hatch.

Since I have fixed the car, I have done several long runs (400+ miles) and it drives so much better. The fogs of smoke have gone completely. The mpg has increased a lot, which helps the pocket. I
