Having checked and double checked the Service Book and paperwork i got with the car i'm now certain the brake fluid has not been changed in the last 3 years.

1. Should i get Skoda to do this or can i get the garage down the road to do it for me?

2. Is their any special brake fluid i should ask them to put in for me for a vRS (no mods)?

As you are out of warranty, get it done wherever is cheapest

As for type of fluid, unless you are unhappy with standard stuff, just use that. Handbook will tell you what sort.

If your "gunna" change it, go for the latest DOT4 spec.

It don't absorb water, don't burn your paintwork & has a higher boiling point.

For a VRS DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 (sometimes called super DOT 4) will be fine, with the 5.1 being better.

It means you change it at two years whether you have done 1 mile or 1 million miles.

It the fact that brake fluid absorbs water that degrades it far more than mileage, so in 2 years it has absorbed enough water to be less effective so should be replaced.

Is it easy to change your own brake fluid? Just waiting for my Haynes manual to arrive!

Hi, Just bought an Octavia TDI estate. I'm halfway through changing the fluid and it's full of little crystals, the last time I can see that the fluid was replaced was 3 years ago. One of the caliper guide pins was just pushed in the whole in the wheel hub (no thread at all)! Quality servicing eh? I should have read the threads on here ref. rear pad changing. Haynes needs to have ago at using circlip pliers on the rear pistons. I made my own tool once I knew what a proper one looked like.

Hope you didn't let all the fluid out or the ABS may have got air stuck in it :(

Yup as per lummux we reccomend every two years.
