Swapping Clio 172

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I am looking to swap my Clio 172 for something more practical (eight weeks to baby dropping  ). I have a budget of around

I can't compare a vRS with a Renault has I have never driven a Renault. However I feel you will find that the Octy is much better built than the Clio. Also in general service and after-care is very good in the Skoda Network.

I think the Octy vRS is a great car to drive, but for a couple of thousand more you could get a 4 door Fabia vRS brand new, which would be much more economical to run, as it is an oil burner.

right... it just so happens i had a renault, not a 172 granted but i had experience of the dealers, their not so good service and their appalling prices so i can relate to where your coming from.

i now have an octavia vRS and can only say good things about it, so much so my better half is sick to the back teeth of my keep going on about that bloody car !!!

i know a guy who uses this forum (monkey boy AKA Paul) he used to have a clio cup and after smashing it big style (not his fault) he changed to the vRS and is very happy with his decision.

on the performance side i'd say the clio is alittle quicker round town and better in the twistys (althought it should be, being half the size and of simular power) on the motorway though theres nothing in it, i even had a friend have to drop his 172 to 4th in order to gain any pace on me, i simply accelerated in 5th and gave good chase.

If theres a need for 4 doors and a boot you could loose small people in plus a super smooth (compared to the renault) ride with good suprising performance as standard and blistering when mildly tweeked then the octy vRS is for you.

and no i dont work for Skoda, i'm just a very very very very very very (you get the picture!?) happy owner.

Hi Chogg,

Recognise the name from cliosport. I also currently drive a clio 172.

I've just swapped my other halfs DCI clio for a Fabia VRS and if I can find the right spec I will also be changing to one. (Albeit chipped)

Where abouts are you based? The reason I ask is some skoda dealers have chipped fabia Vrs as demo cars. I drove a 180bhp one at Simpsons of colne. As an all round package it beats the clio hands down. It feels much faster from 30 onwards and does 50 mpg.

Handling could do with a little tweaking, but for a couple of hundred quid on suspension mods I bet it would handle like a dream.

Happy hunting!

Cheers Potster

Welcome Chris !

Thanks for the replies guys, I am in Fleet, Hampshire. I think i'd go for an Octavia, not sure I like the shape of the Fabia, also i'd like something with a big boot.

Not sure whether to go for black or yellow......wife's not keen on yellow for some reason. Hopefully will have one in a few months.

Hi and Welcome!

Octy will definately have enough room for all of baby's clobber....I don't think the Furby would be able to handle it all.

I would say get the white/silver/grey mesh insets on the trim treated...babies and this don't mix. I've used Simonez Teflon and has handled nipper related "accidents" well.

We also got another 8 weeks till "drop date".

If you haven't bought your baby seat yet wait until you change your car. I say this as we had bought a baby seat, changed the car and the seat belts weren't long enough to go round it. Luckily baby hadn't arrived yet so no probs to change the seat.

Happy hunting. :D

I used to owned a Mk2 clio 172.. Could of got the clio 182 for the same money as I paided for the Fabia vRS but didn't, the skoda has better build quality and is a nicer car generally.

Buy the Octy. I bought mine for the same reason - needed a large car with big boot for the baby but still wanted fun. The space is brilliant for all the rubbish that you seem to end up with with the baby although, as previously mentioned, it is worth putting the Teflon coating on the seats ...... otherwise :weeping: The advice on the baby seat is also very important - you would be amazed the number of car seats that won't fit into pretty normal cars (although strangely enough our car seat will fit into an RS Octy but not a normal Octy - due to the RS seats being slightly thinner than normal Octys) . Have fun

I assume you mean used RS'....try using the search function on the Skoda uk site......they usually have a good selection.

If the baby seat doesn't fit and you haven't useed it you should be able to change it. Would advise against extending seat belt with even proper seat belt extenders.

As above try the Skoda uk website and do a used car search, you can be very specific right down to mileage and colour and you get a good selection generally.

i wanted a used car but with less than 10K on the clock, ended up with a 6 month old silver example that had done 1300miles !!!

Just my personal opinion but I think a nissan micra is an upgrade from any french car. :D:D:D:thumbup::D

The new Micra is the same platform as the new Clio !
