Top Gear 2006 Survey

Featured Replies

New survey is out. Highlights are:

- Skoda top manufacturer

- Fabia 3rd / 152

- Octy 4th / 152

- Superb 7th / 152

Superb's marks are:

Reliability 4 star

Craftmanship 5 star

Driving Exp 3 star

Ownership costs 5 star

Service received 4 star

And it got a mention on Sundays top gear, as did all the skodas being in the top 10.

Rightly deserved - about time jeremy and friends gave Skoda the push it deserves.

Excellent news for us all.

Wasn't his comment that they were there because they were

"better than people expected"??

Does that mean they think they're good or just not bad?

Yes Top Gear were actually very derogatory saying "buying a Skoda was like ordering a ton of manure and then saying oh it doesn't smell as bad as I was expecting" or words to that effect. They certainly were NOT supporting the Skoda brand!

thing is, it dont matter what TG say, its actual skoda owners that put them at the top, trouncing jap manufacturers!

hoorah!

I totally agree with the last comment - the end user opinion is all that matters.

Actually this is not the case. If you play the tape you'll see that Clarkson was taking the micky out of James May because he has a new Fiat Panda. The Panda came 8th in the survey hence Clarkson's link. He mentioned it on the back of the Panda reference (plus the other bits re touching May's knee because there was no room in it and Hammond pointing out there were only 3 knobs in the Panda and that included May as the driver!).

Re the Skoda all Clarkson said was that the Honda S2000 was top "amongst all the Skodas". Also note the survey only rated the old style Octy and not the new one.

Here's the link to the survey of you have one of te other cars. Peugeot and Renault owners beware Top Gear | BBC Top Gear Survey 2006

Sorry, but I don`t like TOP GEAR! Because they bad speak about many excellent car!

And when they compare British auto and european car, always win British auto!

Not actual totals!

Sorry, I did not want nor who offend!

I'd like to see the Octavia RS getting a mention on Top Gear. I missed that on Sunday because my friends sister was in the room and I fancy her...

Good call as TG is on again on Thursday at 7pm unless she's coming round again!!

took the words right out my mouth :) That reference wasn't about Skoda at all. The only mention to Skoda was that the panda was in the top ten...."with all the Skodas". that was it

The only mention to Skoda was that the panda was in the top ten...."with all the Skodas". that was it

But it was a pretty kind of sarcastic way he said it though - I didn't like that. It wasn't a "With all the Skodas " but more of a "with all the Skodas " comment. Hope the smileys get across what i mean. :)

Well I'll have to bow to the weight of others' on that one then - I thought it was aimed squarely at the Skoda rankings in the context but I admit I wasn't actually looking at the TV or paying much attention!

C'mon people, lets not be taking anything that is said on TG too seriously. I've been watching it for years and can find constant contradictions in their reviews, first they love a certain car, then they hate it, but it's not really a car programme, it's a funny show with cars as a loose topic and after all this time, I still love that show.

Interesting comment about the manure though. This has been said in the past. If you have low expectations of a car (Skoda?), then you are easily impressed by it. If you have high expectations (Merc, BMW?) then you are easily disappointed with anything that goes wrong with it - this is the argument that was put to me by a friend of mine who has a merc, which is garbage by the way and sounds like a washing machine when it pulls on my driveway (1.8 petrol turbo). His argument seemed valid until I pointed out that most japanese cars score highly in surveys, and considering that everybody expects them to be reliable and well built, didn't that negate his argument. He didn't seem to have a response to that! to be honest, most people expect Skodas to be good these days and also, if anything goes wrong with one, it would be very easy for the phrase 'I should have known better than to buy a Skoda' to raise its head, so I don't think Skoda owners are biased in favour of the brand at all. Just remember, every one of these uneducated fools provides us with cheap motoring and every time I think of changing my car, I check out the competition and remeber why I bought a Skoda in the first place!

Good Points.

I think on current trends Skoda has 'peaked', best around 2003/4.

Everything that made them attractive seems to be on the slide - initial purchase cost, level of quality (which wasn't high anyway), parts prices, patchy dealer attitude/competence/customer service and servicing prices.

Whether you are a badge snob or not, few people will purchase what is always going to be seen as the 'poor relation' by the masses if the same value is available from a 'normal' brand - purely because no one wishes to throw money away when it comes time to sell.

I have a Top Gear magazine where in the car index at the back its quote's JC saying "With its interior styling and rear legroom 'one of the only cars I can fit in the back off' the Superb is a far more sensible option than the Passat" whether this is a good endoresment of the Superb or yet another snipe at least we know he's sat in one!

JC changes his mind every 5 minutes anyway ;) Anyone remember his review of a Rolls Royce which had an umbrella in the back door? His comment was something like "You get that in a Skoda Superb .... which is about the only thing which is Superb about it!"

The survey is just a reflection on what owners think of their cars which is good for finding out how happy owners are, but is not really quantative in comparing two cars side by side, eg handling, reliability, cost to run which is all very subjective :D

Chris

I had the opinion that the very word "Skoda" stuck in his throat. It should have

choked him.....
