Oil Dip Stick Orange part got broke

Featured Replies

Guys, today I went to check my oil level on my 2002 1.8T with 33,000 kms and when I was trying to pull out the Oil Dip Stick, the orange puller got broke.

Is look like this plastic part got cristalized because of the heat:(

Have any of you has experienced something similar?

Any advice? Do Skoda has a new part number on this part that is more stronger?

BTW, I also notice that the valve cover gasket is leaking oil:mad:

Taking your location and the turbo engine into account, you're probably right about the plastic having heat-failed.

As for the cam cover oil leak, check that the relevant bolts are properly tightened; that's all it needed the last time I had a similar problem.

The orange plastic bit is common across the VW range and when I went looking for one to fit a 2.0L 16v 9A engine, circa '93 they had them in stock at a VW dealer - obviously prone to breaking then. Only cost a couple of pounds of so and very easy to fit. Make sure your engine is warm before you remove the remains of the old one - the plastic goes nice and bendy when warm!

Do the bolts at the cam cover need some torque specification or I can just tighten them a little more? Do they need to be tightened in a special order?

Don't have a manual here, but IME it's usually the bolt nearest the leak that's loose. If the cover gasket's the usual rubber seal, tighten that bolt up until the seal no longer feels loose under it.

UK price of a dipstick is just over £5, Isaac.

Yep, the dipstick tube is very cheap. Available from GSF Car Parts, cheap car parts direct to you and you get a 10% discount if you are a freedom member.

Yup, check all the bolts are the correct torque. About 5Nm followed by 90degrees should do it just nicely. :)

Mine was broken on my Fabia while in for repair (Main Dealer). When i noticed it after collection the service manager asked "Was it not like that when you left it in"  ....He sent a mechanic to find a replacement around the workshop somewhere.:thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:
