Still running in.

Featured Replies

Loving the car, but trying to run in per handbook. I have red-lined it a few times but mostly treating it gently.

I'm also conscious that as well as keeping the revs down generally, I shouldn't labour it either. What's the minimum revs for "steady state".

For example on a flat road going 30 mph (to stop all these pesky flashing signs that Edinburgh council are sprinkling everywhere  ) is it better to keep it in 3rd - just under 2,000 revs or use 4th - just under 1,500 revs. I have the feeling that 1,500 is just a bit too low even though the torque available makes it feel ok.

I have to say that I'm very dubious by the 'Running In' suggestion that is given in car handbooks.

Surely all of the "running in" and testing to see whether the engine is "ok" has been done at the factory? It's like saying: " don't redline the car for at least a 1000 miles otherwise the engine might fall out and you can't blame us"!

It's pathetic. Surely it would be more worth while for the manufacturer to to this at the factory. That way at least they could be sure the engines will be "run in" correctly

Same here!

I'm never sure whats the best gear for the car. coming from a petrol its alot different.

I've been told 30mph should b 3rd gear, but what about 40mph and 50mph?

I cant tell if im working the engine or if its a suitable gear

how many miles have to be done before its fully run in according to handbook. also does an oil change need to be done after 1500miles or so.

According to handbook don't take it above 3/4 max rpm and don't use full throttle for the first 1000km (600ish miles). I know I certainly wouldn't want to be red-lining an engine with fewer miles - however others will disagree.

1500rpm I remember reading somewhere is the lowest a diesel engine should be driven. Generally drive mind between 2 and 2.5k.

fabia145-remap: no oil change needed until first service. 'Fully' run in, apparantly 10k miles
