vrS, rattle from handrake console

Featured Replies

Hi, over last couple of days I have started to get a rattle from the console between the two front seats. It is only nticeable at idle, low revs.

I have taken the cigarette lighter out to make sure its not that. When I get a bit of daylight I will look at securing all the screws etc that I assume hold the unit together but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and has found something else to be the cause?

Mine does it also, found it to be between the console & the passenger seat.

Not done anything about it as car is now out of warranty.

There is very little this can be, the only thing under there is the wiring for the cigarette lighter. Does this happen with the handbrake on or off [or both] ?

I was just about to post a thread about this myself, I have the exact same problem, and I just can't find where the rattle is coming from.

I picked up the car from the garage on Thursday night, I have been having the problem on and off the whole time. If you figure out what it is please let me know, its driving me craxy!

Cheers

Jon

Is this handbrake on or off? Whats the age / mileage of the car?

Its a 53 plate, done 19000 miles, and its when the handbrake is off?

Does this make a difference.

Try placing a small piece of rubber in between the stalk of the seat belt clasp (cant think of the right term but the bit where the seat belt plugs into) and the centre console it self. Mine was rattling and i found the passanger site seatbelt clasp was vibrating against the console.

Mine is with both on & off , it is with very low revs and the car is 53 plate.

As above I know where mine is coming from.

I found on an octy that the button on the handbrake was vibrating causing an annoying rattle. Worked this out by finding a road it happened on then holding and releasing the button.

I was told the cause was the rubber on the handbrake button coming of and the cure was a whole new handbrake lever

The handbrake adjuster is just under the rear of that console. If the adjustment it out it will give a metallic rattle. Worth having someone place their hand on the rear cup holder when the rattle occurs to 'feel' where this is coming from. I would suggest this is the most likely suspect though.

I noticed mine [06 - 10k] is badly adjusted in that one side is tight and one loose. It shouldn't rattle when the cable is tensioned with the HB on. If this is not the cause, the only other suspect would be the wiring for the cigarette lighter.

Grad, you were spot on!

I started engine and dipped clutch to provoke the rattle and it turns out to be the passenger seatbelt "clamp" rattling against the plastic of the console!

You have saved me loads of time trying to source this, many many thanks.

Cool and the gang :)

Another big thanks to Grad - your fix was spot-on. This rattle was seriously getting on my nerves..
