cancelling insurance taking out new insurance

Featured Replies

Now seeing as I've never done this I not sure of the correct procedure on going about this.

Do I cancel my current insurnace before taking out the new one or, does it not matter?

Ta.

Adrian.

It will be a parallel process. Your new insurer will probably insist on seeing your proof of no-claim, which your old insurer provides when you cancel. I suggest you cancel your old insurance at the next available opportunity (end of month?) and let the new insurance commence on the same date. They might overlap on the day itself, but that is better than having no coverage for one day.

I've just called DL and they said I have to cancel in writing.

Now I guess that I should state a date that I wish my policy to be cancelled from then I can take out the new policy and ask for it to start from the same date.

Sorry if this all sounds a bit noody but I have always taken out a new policy on my renewal date and not part way though a term.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Adrian,

you need to ask yor new insurer to commence cover at precisely the time your old policy ends for 2 main reasons..

1) Continuous cover (the obvious reason)

2) IIRC, it is an offence (under the Road Traffic Act i believe) to have 2 concurrent insurance policies on the same vehicle (I'm sure one of our Police officer members can confirm / deny this)

When i switch from Elephant to LV last september, i asked elephant for a specific time & date of cancellation, and gave this to LV as the start time for my new policy. :)

In my experience a new policy will start at 00:01 on the day whereas the old will finish at 23:59... you don't want to drive around un-insured for 2 minutes? ;)

Q, you can cancel & start a policy at any time you like, all you need to do is ask ;)

Ask? But that involves talking to people.... I buy my stuff online exclusively :D

And therefore get ripped off when buying insurance ;)

Adrian,

Be very carefull and CHECK NOW with DL.

I did the same as LV was less than my excess with DL...Got told I need to send in written cancelation..thought okay, left it for 10days then when car was sorted sent off letter with certificate. Called them DL to confirm it was in the post...

imagine my shock when the policy was coming up as cancelled already, not in limbo, but cancelled void nada'd. Since my first call to them about it.

Did I tell you I did stunt doubles for the dog in the add's? I think he's called lucky.

Some insurance companies/brokers will not cancel the insurance until they have received the Certificate of Insurance back from you.

Luckily, I only asked what I need to do to cancel.

Will ring DL again tomorrow to ask and LV to get a proper quote.

Do I need to mention to LV that my RS is modded so they can put a "marker" on my file or, are they really not bothered whether I tell them or not?

THanks for all the advice chaps....greatly appreciated!

Adrian,

Usual form is, they ask about mods, you declare, then the rep will "consult" with a supervisor then OK it all, unless you have a larger engine fitted.

Just make sure you explain exactly what's on the car, they will then instruct you to keep reciepts & photos, should you need to make a claim.

Thanks Geoff!

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't think being insured by two companies is as such illegal, but definatley trying to claim on them both is.

I.E a couple own a car, and both have seperate Policies on it. In the event of an accident, Husband or Wife could claim, but not both, and it would normally be the person involved in the accident/smash/theft/fire.
