Service coming up soon - worried

Featured Replies

Hiya,

My car is due to having a service in April. It currently has 64,000 miles on the clock and is a year 2000 1.6 16v skoda fabia.

The problem is, I am soon to be going to college in April and have hardly any money and am really concerned how much this service will cost. At the moment the car is in a bit of mechanical state - the rear windscreen whiper doesn't work, the petrol cap doesn't close (Will fix tonight), I rarly get a flashing oil sign on my dash and finally I have this weird sign appear all the time on my dash which is orange in colour and looks like some kind of engine part.

Could anyone tell me how much roughly this service would cost. And how much the car would sell for once complete? I am thinking of selling the car as it will cost too much to run.

The car is in great condition apart from the listed above and 3 key scratches down the passenger side from some *****.

the service will probably cost you a good couple of hundred at least... at 64k you may find other jobs need doing as well (timing belt?)

it sounds as if it desperately needs a major service and i think that will cure a lot of the engineey type things...... as for a guide price... check out parkers.co.uk.... but those scratches will bring it down a bit...

I didn't know they put a 1.6 16v engine in a Fabia?

None of those issues sound like servicing issues - so it'll just be a standard service, and they'll highlight what else is wrong with the car. You can then get quotes from them for amending anything else that's wrong with the car - then whether you get them sorted is up to you.

Unless it's a sensor or something, as they don't get replaced as service items...

but those scratches will bring it down a bit...

Shouldn't do, a couple of scratches can be touched up for next to nothing - I certainly wouldn't accept any negotiation on price based on a couple of scratches on a 7 year old car...

Ah sorry, heh its a W reg 1.4 16v Comfort fabia in metallic silver.

Problem is I was thinking of selling the car to help fund for college - then I can travel on the train with a student card.

Its kind of gutting that I might have to spend roughly

totally correct, could be a sensor issue, but when they do a major service theyll clean it all out... i was thinking the engine thing could be an oil type cleaning related issue...

depends on the size of the scratches.... if its been keyed i wouldnt touch it personally until its been resprayed... if its just minor things then touchup paint...

Cool, I'll get it booked in right away with my local Skoda dealers.

The scratches on the car I dont think are really terribly bad. They don't seem to go deep in as you can only really see them if you know they are there - on in the right lighting. There are however some scratches on the car that was there when I bought it. Unfortunatly someone who opened the doors alot scratched the door handle wells with their rings.

Ah thats another thing... I think the air conditioning needs re-gassing as it only blows out hot unless you put it furthest it will go on cold.

Things look grim :(

I just found out not only do I have my car service in April, I also have my tax and mot :|

The 60k service on my Fabia was a major one (including cambelt) and I'd definitely ring around to get some quotes from dealers. Make sure you're sat down too!!!

Chris

Skoda do an aircon service for £85 all in, last I looked this included an inspection, clean and regas.

Bit of a good deal IMHO.
