Handbrake button rattle

Featured Replies

Hi I notice that a few have had this rattling handbrake button (if you have an unknown rattle check there) so here is my fix.

First remove the handbrake surround (2 torx under the rear ashtray) pull it up and unplug ciggy lighter.

Next remove hand brake gator, not so obvious how from the Haynes manual especially in a VRS.

If you are just going to stick something on to the button to make it a bit tighter fit now is the time then just refit the gater and you're done.

I thought th rattle might be coming from further down so i shimmed the rod that the button is on. Cut a shim from a coke/beer can to shape in pic

Then insert it inside the hand brake around the rod connected to the button (you'll have to yank the button off first) then bend the small tabs youve left on the shim around the left and right outside of the handbrake, these will be held in place by the gator and stop the shim moving.

Time for re-assembly if your going to put something on the button do this while the button and gator are still off and make sure its not too tight before you refit as the button is a swine to remove with the gator on.

I used black tape on the button cos i'm not a big fan of chrome anyway.

Shimming the handbrake may have been overkill but hey it sure as heck ain't rattling any more and it still operates smoothly.

Good post. I've read about the handbrake rattle before but (touch wood) don't seem to suffer from it.

I just have the rear N/S tweeter which rattles instead :(
