Combi upgrades

Featured Replies

I'm back with another Y plate PD100 combi after the missus chopped the last one in for a 130 Golf mk4 :eek:

After experiencing the remapped poke of the 130 I fancy upping the combi a bit, but worry that it won't handle the extra power without ending up showing it's knickers in a field ...

A few questions to debate please ... remember it's a combi;

1) Rear ARB or Tow bar ?

2) 16's on 205/45 or 15's on 195/65 ?

3) ChippedUK or a tuning box ?

I should also point out that as I'm the wrong side of 40 I don't drive like my ar5e is on fire, can read the road well enough not to need bl00dy great brake conversion kits ... and I know the throttle goes both ways!

LOL ! It seems we may have a lot in common. :D

I drive a Golf Mk4 PD130 (re-mapped).:rolleyes:

I guess from your user name you are either an ornathologist or have an interest in bikes like I do ? :confused:

Missus has a remapped PD100 Combi. :D

It's not quite in the same ballpark as the remapped Golf mind (or even on the same planet as the bike) when it comes to performance but it's not actually that bad with a remap, about standard VRS performance.:)

I wouldn't want to "chuck it around" very much with the standard suspension but so far as straightline performance and stopping is concerned, it's what I would class "ok" as standard, certainly nothing to worry about unless you want to get a bit ambitious in the twisties. :thumbup:

Your choice I have neither (detachable towbar on Golf though)

2) 16's on 205/45 or 15's on 195/65 ?

I'm running 15' 195/65 wheels & tyres on the Fabia, they were off my Golf having upgraded to 16' on the Golf and they are fine.

3) ChippedUK or a tuning box ?

Angel Tuning remap for me on both vehicles ..... well impressed ! :thumbup:

Likewise, very much the wrong side of 40 here. :rolleyes:

Most of my miles are done on two wheels and what four wheel mileage I tend to do is in my Golf. TBH though I'd be happy enough to drive the Fabia all day long with just the remap and nothing else and it wouldn't worry me as it's reasonably brisk, stops ok and I know I'm not going to get really silly with it ! :)

HTH

1) Why the "either", why not both?

2) Rather than 205/45s, try 195/50s on the 16s as a ride/looks/performance compromise.

3) A decent generic remap all the way.

Can't do multiple posts ... so here we go;

Td-eye;

I don't twitch, I used to ride big bikes in all weathers and now I'm half crippled these days with arthritis in my knees and back as a result!

The 130 Golf is now remapped to +50hp +90Nm, and goes pretty well :thumbup: but doesn't have the low speed 'immediate attack' stomp of the Fabia - it needs a few revs before it goes.

I'm buying a set of 16" Montreal 1 alloys (my favourite design along with S4's) and can't decide if they should go on the Golf or the Fabia.

You must wear the trousers in your house, cos I never see the golf keys!

Vindaloo;

I've read on here that tow-bars and rear ARB's will fit together - but I'm tight fisted and lazy ... I've also read somewhere on these pages that a decent tow-bar will be as good as a rear ARB, and I'm after experiences/opinions before I decide what to do next.

I agree with 195/50's for comfort but what will they do for the accuracy of the speedo?

As to the remap, I'm less than a mile from ChippedUK in Bromsgrove and I'm having to make wide detours to stop myself calling in ....

One observation about the Fabia ... after owning one and driving it daily for 2 yrs then only being away from one for 2 weeks whilst I drove the Golf, I can't BELIEVE how rough it is in comparison. I know there's a massive gap in the prices of each, but still :eek:

If the combi is anything like my old PD100 hatch, you'll be wanting to do something with the suspension too. I ran Eibachs on mine which made the handling nice and tidy without compromising on the ride quality, however, if you can stretch to Koni FSD dampers, they seems to be the bee's knees currently.

:rofl:

PS: I agree with your comment about the Fabia feeling much rougher after driving the Golf ..strange really ?:confused:

i have 195/50s on mine as it had 185/60s standard.....
