Battery removal

Featured Replies

Hi There

OK this is probably the easiest question ever but I am stuck. How do I get the battery out of my 1999 Octavia GLXI?

It seems to be wearing a coat and there are 4 wires bolted to the top of it making it a pain in the **** to get out.

Anybody point me at the right procedure please?

Thanks a lot

James

Hello and welcome :) On my little Fabia, you're not supposed to take the battery out (unless you know what you are doing) as it can cause very expensive problems (and I've heard tell of these). Perhaps wait till you're sure you have learned enough? No help at all, just a word of caution from someone who knows nothing :o

Yep, removing the battery will throw no end of fault codes etc.

However, once you have removed the cover, just undo the 2 bolts holding the terminals to the battery, and whip it out. :)

Hi

OK so given that my battery is flat (my own fault changed the headlight and then forgot to turn it off after a test ) and I don't have AA homestart!! I assumed taking the battery out and charging it up was the best bet sounds like this may not be the case?

I still don't know what the 4 wires bolted to the top of it are - I really thought this was just a case of undoing the terminals and hauling it out!

As a blonde female, I always carry croc clips so that I can flutter my eyelashes and get someone to jump start me LOL. At home, I have a battery charger anyway, that I plug into the electric socket and yes it takes a while, but not too long just to get it going, then get the alternator to make up :D

For myself, if you are happy that the battery is still good, I wouldn't even think of taking it out, but I'm not a manfolk :D Can you survive by bus or train till you decide what's best?

Hi

I too always have the jump start option but then last time I had to jump start my car (a nasty old renault) it subsequently died a horrible electrical death! (I didn't really see the connection but the guy at the garage wanting

Is it totally dead or do you have ignition lights? if your worried try bump starting it with the help of others...........

For what its worth when the battery gets drained as you state it will never be as good again:eek:

Have changed loads of these myself and never had any issues with faults.... but then i have never had vag-com to check:P

The battery is not totally flat I do get some lights when I turn the key - although they flicker a bit!

I was going to wait and see if the battery came back to life but I guess that xould take til Christmas, so I figure whip it out and stick it on charge.

Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

i let my battery fully discharge twice and ive just had to replace is at it wouldnt hold its charge more than a few days

lights would word but no way would it strt the engine

was a piece of cake

unbolt the battery terminals

the plastic block on top of the battery unclips into two parts at the sides

the rest of the plastic unclips by sliding it to the front of the car and up

just undo 1 bolt and bracket at the bottom of the battery and it just pulls out

the plastic sleve thing isnt attatched to anything and just slides off

Remember that after reconnecting the battery you will need to reset the operation of the convenience system for the electric windows, if fitted.

I disconnected the battery on my vRS to fit my CAI, i haven't had any problems what so ever! Maybe VAG-COM would tell a different tale, but everything seems fine.

Quick update if anyone is wondering. I couldn't get the battery out in the end the bolt at the bottom was all rusted to hell and would not move no matter how kindly I asked. Managed to jump start it off one of the wife's friend's cars today and it seems to be OK - no apparent ill effects from having the battery fully disconnected anyway, mind you I guess time will tell :)

By the way never try to jump start off a Citroen Xsara Picasso, after 5 minutes staring under the bonnet thinking I was having a breakdown of some kind it turns out the battery is under the passenger seat!??!
