4X4 Octavia - Tyre Question

I understand that with a permanently engaged 4x4 system it is necessary to keep to the same circumpherence/brand of tyres and near enough the same tread depth on all four wheels, to avoid undue strain on the drive components.

Would a "crossover" wheel change achieve this at say every 10,000 mile service?

I would be interested to hear from other 4X4 drivers about their tyre regime and any recommendations.

Of course the Octavia's 4wd system isn't permanently engaged, so you don't have to be quite so careful.

Many people nevertheless recommend rotating tyres to balance wear, but I tend to just swap in "axle" pairs, putting the new tyres on the rear.

The 4wd is permanently engaged! 98%-2% in either direction at any time. My 4x4 actually wore the rears quicker than its fronts on the 1st set something I am told is due to constantly carrying weight in the rear owning to mine being a workhorse. I swopped mine on recommendation of the dealer at 14k so yes it could be worth while.

Mine are wearing reasonably evenly - probably slightly less tread left on the fronts. I've got around 3mm of tread left after 22k miles (they haven't been swapped around).

As far as I know, Octavia mk1 has 95%-5% with the standard controller and Octavia mk2 has 90%10% with its standard one. This is not what you can call a AWD system, is a kind of non-permanently one.

As for the tyres, fit same size and dimensions for all wheels, 205/55/R16 will fit perfectly. :thumbup:

All VAG (4x4, quattro or 4motion) systems are permanent, you do not have an option to disengage it or indeed lock it and drive is shared between all 4 wheels at all times just in variable degrees of power to whichever wheels need it, this is worked out by the ECU monitoring the wheel speeds and driving characteristics. Systems like Renaults on its old Espace and Scenic RX4 worked in a different way to VAG's, being much cruder and worked like a clutch system which engaged whenever there was a speed difference between front and rear axles. These cars were 2WD until you lost traction, problems being with that system was that as it was unused most of the time and quite exposed to road crud it tended to seize up and lock the transmission into 4wd and cause strain on the transmission and driveshafts. Hi,

I've a 2006 4x4 and I've put a good 50k kms on the 1st set of dunlop tires. They've still decent thread depth all round but will need replacement in about 2 months. Is it possible to get the exact same tires again - almost Octavia specific - so much so that the same mileage will be achieved before the 2nd set will get the same life?

The 4X4 is fitted with ESP. The Owner's Manual states on page 214 that all four wheels must be fitted with the same tyres in order to achieve problem-free operation of the ESP. Differing rolling circumferences of the tyres can lead to undesirable reduction in engine output.
