Tuning box and EGR valve

Featured Replies

My love affair with the 'ebay' type bolt on tuning box came to an end last week after i lifted the cambox cover on our PD100 combi and saw the leak around the EGR valve.

I remembered someone on these pages hinting at this problem a while ago so I immediately removed the tuning box, cleaned up the EGR valve area and crossed my fingers - I checked it this morning after a day stuck in stop/start traffic yesterday and it's still clean on the outside.

Perhaps a remap is the better option after all ?

Could you explain the link between overfuelling and a leaking EGR valve? :D FWIW, I used VAG-COM to turn my EGR valve right down.....

Just spoken to a local garage about this, he reckons the leak has been caused by the routine over-fuelling of the resistor tuning box causing the whole valve and associated pipework 'to be full of snot' ... he advised me to throw it as far away from my car as possible, and give the car a good blast to help clear things out.

He also confirms that a good remap will turn the EGR settings down, so I'll be off to see Jayson at ChippedUK (a mile from my house) as soon as the budget allows.

LOL. I remember Jayson. He did me replacement Viper chips for my OBDI BMW's. Brilliant value.

Actually I'm just back from ChippedUK in their new Bromsgrove premises, I took my partners Golf PD130 back as the 180hp remap was too fierce for her ... she was too scared to drive it because of the mountain of torque at 2k rpm which lit up the wheels in the dry and made wet traffic islands interesting!

Anyway, Jayson took the trouble to rewrite the map whilst I waited. The car is now much much more progressive and deceptively quick with around 165hp and a fatter, flatter torque curve ... at no extra cost, which is bl00dy good service in my book - thanks

Apparently their PD100 remap gives around 138hp, so that'll do.

(a bit more with PD160 intake??)

Couldn't she just not press the noisy pedal as hard? :)

Just out of curiosity, how much does Jay charge for remapping the TDi?

I know someone who had a resistor tuning box on his vRS... gave a good 150 bhp... but killed his EGR valve..... had it replaced under warranty ;)

yashicamat had a digital on on his PD100 ( a proper dragon box) was much better... didn't smoke, and gave about 130 bhp :)

I know a chap who ran a resistor mod on his PD100 for over 30k miles without killing his EGR at all ;) At the end of the day, all means of tuning (aka overfuelling) will result in deposits in the EGR ... in fact, take apart one on a standard car which has done 60k miles ;) Best just to turn it off, or block it off and not have to worry about it :D

I had that nice man BryanD tuen mine down :)

Madam couldn't cope with the frantic wheelspin, the original remap has a vertical line on the torque curve from 2000-2200rpm which is pretty mind bogling to most experienced drivers when it chimes in mid corner

Cost? £250 + vat
