I got the first chance last night to test the ombrello... It was drizzling on the way home...

At first as soon as the water hit the screen it soon beaded up and headed up the screen - even at around 40mph. So, there I was travelling in the rain with no wipers on. Excellent! (good enough for my Dad to want to buy my 2nd pack off me for the new Golf)

Then I noticed a little quirk. When it stopped drizzling, I was still getting moisture on the screen from car/lorry spray, but it wasn't beading up. It was just sort of sitting there and building up (I guess this contained a lot of muck / road salt) So in this case I still needed wipers and washer fluid. When using the wipers with ombrello though, there is quite a bit of streakiness.

I guess this stuff only really comes into it's own in proper rain.

Anyone know what's best to use to clean the screen to make sure the life of the ombrello is not comprimised? I was a bit wary of using washer fluid alone.

dont really know to be honest cause i'd have thought any type of cleaning solution would reduce the "life" of the treatment.

i used rain wizard or rain-X a few times before (the one in the pink dildo looking applicator) and that seems to work very well, same beading effects you saw but none of the streaking you experienced.

I use Rain-X (in bottle form! ) and found that it goes smeary if the windscreen is not completely clean before you apply it. Not sure how long it lasts, but tend to reapply it every couple of months anyway and haven't seen any smearing. Great product

Edited to add, that I apply it to all the windows and the wing mirrors, not just the windscreen.

I've used Rain-X (similar to Ombrello) for years and I find it's the wipers that rub it off rather than the screen wash that effects it. I normally use tap water with a dash of washing up liquid during the summer and screen wash during the winter (to reduce freezing). Re-apply every couple of months to keep it effective.

Edited to add, that I apply it to all the windows and the wing mirrors, not just the windscreen.

No one remembers the name but everyone remembers what it looks like.

I've used this one and Rain-X and I found Rain-X to be better.

Found that, the Pink Dildo shaped one , was very difficult to get rid of and smeared the screen.

Haven't tried the Ombrella stuff yet.......haven't washed the car in ages plus I can't seem to find any of that heavy duty windscreen paste Jon was talking about.

auto glym do a very good screen wax, its shifts all the crap that normally builds up on the screen and doesnt leave strieks or smears... its easy to use as well which is always a bonus..
