Recurrent noise when turning.

Featured Replies

I'm hoping someone can advise before I take my poor Fabia TDi into the garage yet again.

Over the last few days a noise has become apparent when I turn left. I wouldn't describe it as a 'knocking' (having looked at the sticky about the front ARB, which I had replaced just over a year ago anyway). It is much softer than that and reminds me of the noise you hear when you drive over those strips of paint they sometimes mark across the road approaching roundabouts. Something else it reminds me of is helicopter blades when they spin slowly (and take away the whine of the engine etc). It's the kind of noise I'd imagine you'd hear if one of the tyres had a bald patch on it. I only hear it when steering left, and the sharper I turn, the more pronounced the noise is. The faster I'm going, the faster the noise repeats, so there's obviously something rubbing somewhere.

I did have a new front tyre fitted on the driver's side about a fortnight ago after the old one punctured, but the passenger one is still in decent condition.

Any suggestions as to what it might be before I fork out for the garage again?

Could be a wheel bearing or maybe something caught on the brake disc like a heat shield.

or a CV joint?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see whether there's any guidance on wheel bearings in the Haynes Manual. Sorry for being thick, but what's a CV joint and where is it located?

Cheers,

Richard.

CV joint is the universal joint at the end of the driveshaft going into the hub

but whichever way you turned the steering , i would imagine it would make the noise anyway

I had the same noise when I damaged the inside rim of an alloy on a pot hole - Nothing on the outside of the rim 1/2" ding on the inside!

Many thanks for the above suggestions. I can't see anything obvious on either the wheels or the suspension (as best I can see without a proper jack) so I guess it's back to the flippin' garage again. Aircon needs sorting too. Going to be an expensive Spring.
