Featured Replies

How can I check the speed of my broadband connection?

No, curremtly you are running 0.7

But my results are usually up and down all over the place.

Thought as much.

Reason I want to know is I asked for an upgade from 2MB to 4MB. They said it would take 2 hrs before the upgrade would take place.

Seems like the upgrade will be more like 2Mb anyway!

I was supposed to have a 4mb upgrade on NTL, have only see it break 3000 once.

Ahem! Virgin Media now, you know!! :D

Yeah, give it a new name. Hasnt improved service any.

When we switched to Sky they begged us to keep the box and even installed it upstairs for us free of charge so we could get all the regular channels and freeview. It worked for about two weeks and now nothing.

I can't really complain myself. I have had no major hiccups with NTL.

The only thing to date is this recent pull out from Sky. I'm paying for Sky channels that I don't have! So, I asked for the broadband upgrade for free & they actually gave it to me for less than what I'm paying for the current speed.

According to the Virgin Media speed tester I'm now on 4MB broadband.

Just done another speed test with thinkbroadband & it's gone up to 1MB!

Does depend how busy your local exchange is Jon, and how many people you're sharing with (contention ratio).

I'd try it in the early hours, if possible - see what the speed return is then.

Also, might be an obvious question, but are you running the test as the only PC connected, and with no other programs running? (file sharing, IM progs etc)

Steve

As far as speed testing goes , the best thing you can do is download a largish real world file.

You can "test" this by downloading one of the 100mb files here - Zen Internet - Test Files

what speed do you get?

The modem is connected to a wireless router so I can use the PC & laptop.

I did the test with no other programs running on the PC only - laptop was tucked away in it's little bed! :D

I usually tucked away in bed myself in the early hours!
