I have a double DIN space, which is currently filled with a 6CD changer and a Gamma head unit.

I think I want the Double DIN sat nav (genuine VW), but how do I go about this, what are my options, whats it going to cost me?

Also, there is obviously a screen, are there possibilities of having a TV tuner, DVD player, extra screens for the back etc?

Tom: You can either get an audio line-in (seperate to the CD changer, yay) with a lead (about £20) or get video in with a special S-video to MFD adaptor box (about £100). You could plug a DVD in there (or a PC, or a console, etc) but the screen resolution isn't great (400x300 odd I think) and it's 4:3, not 16:9. I hear the TV-tuner option isn't too hot either.

I don't think you can get the video out of the unit for rear-seat TVs - it's just not that advanced. Looks a damned sight better than a Symphony rad/cass though! Plus the gyro/ABS system is better than plain GPS for getting you around town and through tunnels/underpasses.

Budget £200-£250 for the unit (on ebay), plus £30 for the plug-and-play cable adaptor and GPS aerial (on ebay again), plus another £80 for a new map disc. If you buy a map disc off ebay, make sure it looks legit. If it's a few years old, then fine. If it's supposedly 'new' then I wouldn't bother - the one I got was a pirate copy on CD-R :(. Navshop.com and bluespot.co.uk will see you right.

If you want traffic updates (turn left at next junction to avoid traffic jam...) you need a TMC box. The TMC box is also required to make the steering wheel controls and maxi dot work, on some cars. It's not a plug and play fit either - I think you have to start splicing wires together. That's a whole minefield I've happily avoided so far.

The part numbers you want will begin 3B0 (for the passat). The VW unit has red LEDs but the Skoda unit (1U0) has green LEDs.

The OE TV tuner that was fitted to Audi A8, S4 etc a fair few years back was deleted as a standard fit, pretty sure it was due to it being awful, picking up about one channel and it was always snowy.

Why not get a TomTom and watch DVDs at home? Who is going to want to watch TV in the back of a passat? Sounds mad, and that's coming from me!

The AVIC units are awesome - although you pay for it!

shifty had one in his vRS I think -- Would certainly be the least hassle way to get everything you want, you can even have a reversing camera :lol:

I'll soon be starting a new job as a highways supervisor in a not very familiar area, so the main reason I want the MFD is its a reasonably priced alternative to a TomTom.

Once a fortnight I do a 160 mile trip with 2 passengers, thought they might appreciate additional entertainment, especially as screens cost peanuts these days.

It seems I can mount my CD changer in the arm rest too!! Wicked!

The MFD is a little more expensive and a little less feature-filled than a TomTom, but more accurate. And it looks good!

I'd probably just buy a separate DVD/LCD unit for the rear seats. It'll be cheaper and easier! Technically you can't play a video anywhere the driver can see it while you're on the move anyway, plus the MFD will blank the video input when it detects the GALA pulses. You can disable the GALA, but then the navigation isn't as good.

Hmmmm, keeping a close eye with interest!

I'm quite keen to not mess too much with the car, although I am thinking of upgrading the speakers and add a small 4 channel amp too, assuming the MFD will allow that!

Yes I did, but haven't had any updates for the maps for over 3 years, would like to know if I can install a different map system to the one it came with.
