Hi there,

Being as I'm new here (and to forums as well) I thought that I'd better say hello.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing so apologies if this either screws up completely or is posted about 50 times

A few things about myself - Male, 28, currently single, live on my own in Derbyshire, have a younger brother, first car - Volvo 340 DL hatchback - stop laughing DL stood for deluxe not diesel ! If your going to have a crash (as most first time drivers do) then why not choose something built like a tank? - I'm still waiting for that first big shunt! Kept that Volvo for 6 years then moved on to a Octavia GLX TDI (90bhp) estate. Despite everything that I've thrown at it, (hiking gear, mountain bikes, camping trips, numerous trips to the tip, my rather enthusiastic driving etc, etc) it survived the ordeal and has recently been sold.

My father drove a Volvo XC90 for a couple of years (bought new) and then had a stroke (he's OK but doesn't really want to drive anymore - not too good on his feet and the medication makes him drowsy).

Being that I'm the only driver in the family (my mum and younger brother both don't drive) I'm the one left to do all the chauffeuring about (shopping for 3 households, trips to the doctors/dentist, can you take me to - ?, I need picking up from - , etc). Fortunately we all live a short distance from each other (Me and my brother have both moved out separately but both live alone).

I've been driving the Volvo but it doesn't really suit my driving style - its a superb long distance motorway cruiser, quiet, refined, comfortable, and great in bad weather, but I'd rather be on some country roads with a few corners which is where the Volvo suffered. To that extent my parents said "get rid of it then if you don't like driving it - trade it in". After studying the form on numerous vehicles and collecting brochures as is they were going out of fashion, we then went to the dealers for a look at some of them in the metal.

After going through the requirements which were needed - prefer an estate for more load lugging, has to be easy for my father to get into/out of for trips to the doctors etc, don't mind diesel, not sure about FWD - the GLX was a little scrabbley in the wet, has to be a good drive for those times when I'm out on my own, nothing too flash or attention grabbing, plus taking into account my parents wishes ("NO Subaru's and nothing with a coffee table (spoiler) on the back") - the Volvo is theirs after all.

After taking all of this into account and the trade in value of the XC90, by a unanimous decision we chose another Octavia. Being as the value of the Volvo was still quite high we were offered a new Octavia vRS TDi estate from Clock garage in Derby with some options as a straight swap.

I know I said that I wasn't that keen on FWD cars after the first Octavia but the trick diff and traction control should sort out those problems.

With a little luck I should be going to pick it up on Wednesday 11th April.

And there I was thinking that I didn't have much to say.

Thanks to everyone who posted with a hello messege.

In reply to Loz its going to be a Black metallic estate -i'm thinking its going to be a pain in the a##e to keep clean and they don't do any mudflaps for the vRS model.

Think i've seen some rally style ones somewhere in the forums.

don't do any mudflaps for the vRS model.

Some people have them fitted so it is possible.

Enjoy your new car!
