DIY Window tinting ???

Featured Replies

I'm looking at putting a mirror tint on some glass and I was wondering what sort of effect you get and how easy is is to do, so:

  1. How easy is it to apply to a flat regular shape?
  2. What sort of light transmission do you get with mirror tints? (I want high light levels)
  3. Does the mirror tint make them fully opaque on the mirror side?
  4. Will Halfords/Motorworld/Ebay cheapos do the job or will higher quality be better?

BTW, this isn't for the car.

I have applied mirror film to my back door -- sunlight would come through right into your face if you were trying to cook.

On a large flat surface its fairly easy to apply BUT...

1. Glass must be SPOTLESSLY clean i.e squeaky clean.

2. Use cardboard or similar to make a template - far easier to cut almost to size before application.

3. Use a soapy water mix in a spray bottle to lube the glass AND the film as you remove the backing.

4. Use a soft plastic spatula to sqeegee out the water.

5. TIP: to easily remove backing film, use two peices of cellotape either side of the film.

As for which film to use -- the cheaper films are very difficult to apply simply because they tend to be very thin and crease easily -- but this is less of an issue if you pre-size it -- give yourself a couple of inch's allround.

Yes they are fully qpaque on the outside, but there is still good light transmission

Thanks that helps, it's for french doors in the bedroom:confused: Strange flat design:rolleyes: as my blinds don't give privacy and darkness at the same time.

i tinted the back windows on my mazda but i took them out(bolt on not retractable) and it went quite easily :)

i agree with everything skodaw said but i'd say use a decent squegee to remove the excess water then a lint free cloth on the edges to absorb and left over water.

to do patio doors i'd say remove them and do them flat as it will make life a lot easier and also 2 of you will make it easier to place the film on the window :)
