Which Engine Oil???

Featured Replies

As per the title, which engine oil would you recommend for a Octy1, 1.9TDi 110bhp.

It is due a service, which i am having done tomorro, but which oil should in get them to use, (they have asked me to choose the oil, as they know i want better than what they have.)

All recommendations greatly welcomed, and hopefully i can go and buy it later today.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

I can't remember which one is recommended for the non-PD 110bhp block.

But the owner's manual will specify to which VAG standard the oil has to meet. From there, you just look at the back of all the oils in Halfords for one that meets the spec.

For PD engines, it's 505.01 for those on fixed service intervals and 605.01 for those on variable IIRC.

In my MKI non PD i used mobil1 supersyn 0W-40 its fully synthetic and conforms to VW 505:00-01 (available in halfords)

Its a bit on the dear side coming in at about

Millers XF Long Life is good. (VW506.1 or VW507 versions) (£38 for 5L)

The garages usually use Shell Helix, which IMHO is a very good oil.

What are the garage offering?

The TDI 110 is VW505.1 but since i was on variable I always had VW506.1 put in as that was what the garage had to hand. That would get about 27k between service indicators coming on, which IMHO is pretty good.

GSF do quantum badged oils (ie: VAG's brand) at very low prices. I used the appropriate one of those in my non-PD A3 TDI.

I got that put in on my first variable service at Star Performance 18 months ago. Was charged a lot less than that for it though :) Though they they may have put the price up since then.

Yes, oil prices have gone up just a little bit in the last year. :(
