VRS Custom FMIC

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Fresh new mod for me ....

Here is a few pics ...and i suggest for you to follow ....

TazFMIC2.jpg

It shows the new route for the pipe (turbo --> IC) since the other route (S3 type) has no room near the wash tank (i replaced the 3L with bigger 5,3L) to pass the pipe and return back to intake manifold.

TazFMIC2a.jpg

Mount ...only little cutting of plastics for the FMIC sides to fit.

Samco elbows fit without inside bumper cutting.

TazFMIC3a.jpg

Varius color cables are visible .....(sensor cables from the water mister).. :D needs to be relocated now..

TazFMIC4a.jpg

DV original location .....

I installed also a T type of insert in the original tube connected to the intake manifold (throttle body) in order to reallocate the DV near the TB (there isn't any photo yet).. :(

TazFMIC5a.jpg

Space available with the bumper support (& bumper) on.

Notice that the IC is not distrurbing the bumper so no cutting needed. :D

TazFMIC6a.jpg

Front view with the extra holes created for better air flow ..especially the upper IC part (back of the bumper support).

Some first impressions......

No lag (only in my mind) :D:D .

After some tests the first 10cm of the hot part of the IC was a little warm...the rest was very cold :D

Tech details:

Core data 480mm X 250mm X 63mm

End tanks custom..(as you like) :D:D

End tubes in IC 60mm

Piping 60mm (larger than the stock..but no lag... :D )

The cost was nearly 700E.

Some Vag-Com data will follow later on.... :D

Try it for your next mod guys... :)

Looks good Loukas!

As for the FMIC....already on the case.

Your pics may well prove invaluable.

Cheers.

Adrian.

what benefits do you get from this mod?

Who'd be mad enough to fit such a thing to their car?

fmicin2.jpg

:D

Loukas,

what did you use to line those extra cooling holes either side of the number plate?

Thanks.

Adrian.

A 'custom' intercooler Jon - not some old Scania Truck intercooler!

what benefits do you get from this mod?

You want big? Try one from an Audi All Road - kin huge!

jacco.jpg

:D

Lower inlet temps. much, much lower inlet temps! Quite a bit more power as well :D

who would be mad enough...

:D

I Want, I Want, I Want!!!

Seems there is two types of intercooler owners,

stealthy (fits into standard bumber, barely noticiable visually from outside of vehicle)

Loud and proud (makes the radiator feel small!!!!)

Very nice guys, very nice!!!

Matt

I Want, I Want, I Want!!!

If your definately interested we're putting together a FMIC package with Jabba.

Checkout the group buy section for details.

Cheers.

Well,

I was considering many FMIC designs (including the Tavia's one...) but at the end concluded that this is the optimum for number of reasons:

Space available

no heavy cutting drilling , etc

Stealth look as possible

Minimum lenght of the pipes, core, etc

Cooling capacity & setup to be enouph for 350hp or maybe more.

Minimun preassure drop (internally IC) for charge air.

little preassure drop for ambient air (for cooling rest parts, water cooler, air condition, etc)

I think this design , size, etc is a very good approach for the above. :D

Adrian,

For the holes in the number plate i used some bass reflex type of plastic caps.

These where inserted firmly and cannot easily slip out.

By doing these holes (and some others vertical in the bumper support) the air flow - turbulance shows that the hidden IC part gets discent air too.

Tavia,

What is the preassure drop (charge air) in this design?

The length is twice as much as the core lenght......

Kenny,

Benefits??

Very cool charge air going in ......so ECU knows it.....so ECU do not pull timing back due to high air intake......so gain many horses . :D

If you consider that on summertime we have 30-40 deg outside temp ...turbos are suffering...

I have VagCom logs with only chip (Revo 4 bar at Low boost 9 timing 6) and stock rest with 30 deg outside temp......

The intake temp was up to 70 deg at 6000...

Hehe, mine after the FMIC dropped from 60-70ish to about 18 :D Pressure drop, IIRC, was about 0.1-0.2 bar, which was good.

Loukas,

What is the FMIC off?

Ive seen the ABD one it looks neat. Surely you need to put some grilling over it to stop it being punctured by low flying stones?

also does the extra cold air affect the engine management in any way?

No although, ideally, the car should be mapped for it.
