Insurance Discs

Featured Replies

It incences me every time I see a Police Camera, Car Wars type TV programme the number of low lifes that drive around uninsured. Is'nt it about time that we pushed our lazy Government to actually DO something to combat the ever increasing number of dangerous vehicles on our roads starting with the introduction of Insurance Discs displayed on the inside of the windscreen?.

Yes totally

I would definitely be very happy with an insurance disc.

Some uninsured **** somewhere is owed a beating from me, and probably many others too.

It shows that this has become a huge problem, when you find direct line advertising that they will cover you "when" you are hit by an uninsured driver at no expense to you!

I thought all insurance details were now on some big government database and that thanks to ANPR, Police don't even need to lift a finger.

We have had insurance discs on the windscreen for years. Handy if someone damages your car as the policy number and company are on it.

Still does not stop some people from taking a chance though.

Good point!

I'd just like them to make insurance compulsory in NZ

this is true..... and the traffic police can seize and crush the car if the driver wont pay up.... unfortunately we need a HELL of a lot more traffic police on the road... I drove from the lakes to newcastle and then back to the lakes on monday, and didn't see one... :(

But a disc would mean you and I could walk along our street at home and see the cars that are not insured and then because i am sick of paying for all the uninsured tw*ts phone the DVLA/police hotline who check on the system, then come along and collect the car there and then

There was talk a few years back of a combined insurance/tax/mot disk bout a year back.

Idea being the post office would take your MOT sheet and isnurance, and give you a tax disk with all the info on.

Never took off though as the databases were made available to the police in real time.

What does get me though in the road wars type programs is the minor offenders get hammered, yet those who are disqualified, nicked the motor, needed the chopper to keep tabs on them as they were driving dangerously, bash every car (esp police) going, and simply get a 2yr driving ban.

WTF!

No wonder many drivers detest the police - esp when they prefer to sit in a layby with a camera rather than catch real criminals (long story where I live - Surrey police have helped turn it into Iraq/Gaza etc)

Like the DVLA no tax hotline ???

Sorry to be so sarcastic - had more response from the local county "dumped car " scheme - anything untaxed i fair game to them - or at least frightens the owner into getting it off road or taxed -- this Govt's response would be yet more "plastic " policemen who could only report the cars, and by time a real policeman got there the car would be off the road - and since it's probably unregistered , little chance of finding it.

Unfortunately just because a car is covered for one person, doesn't mean it's covered for anyone. :(

Would definitely be a start though...

I did Dumbarton - Chester return on Easter weekend, and only saw one Police car and 2 motorcycles (and my start point meant I pass the Dumbarton police station and traffic depot).

I can't remember where (possibly Australia) but I heard of a scheme that puts an insurance levy on the price of petrol so that every car being driven has at least third party cover.

The petrol companies collect the money at the pumps, and then pay it over to the government (or their appointed insurance fund).

Obviously the price you pay for fully comp insurance should fall, as the "third party" bit is already covered - the only disadvantage with this system is it another "rip-off" opportunity for the government.

And whilst I'm in agreement with others about the slow painful deaths that should be inflicted on people driving without insurance, I suspect the proliferance of speed cameras in recent years has somewhat encouraged driving an unregistered / unisured vehicle.

Traffic wardens have the the power to note/report vehicles that have out of date tax.. a guy down the road got done for it.. his car was parked on the road for months, then randomly a traffic warden wandered up and slapped a notice on his windscreen.

But if car details on DVLA are incorrect - owner takes notice off, moves car before police arrive - DVLA send out fine as they "know where to look", to wrong address, nothing gets done.

The ANPR sites are usually the same ones on a regular basis - with advertisement of half the local traffic force ,so little chance of being caught.

And in the unlikely event of a car being seized - plenty more cheap cars around -what's wanted are more police .

Well saying that...last year I just renewed my car insurance...was 2 days late doing it as I wasn't in the country. So renewed my car insurance and headed back up to Manchester.

Was popping along at 70mph passed a police car, and it started flashing its blue lights and pulled me over. Not cos I was speeding or anything, just cos my car was shown up as not having any insurance! Told them it was renewed this morning and they let me go!

My car was not kitted or anything obtrusive..so can only think they do random checks on motorway or have a number plate recognition thing on their car which checks to see if a car is insured!

Just realised the feckers would just start stealing them to order :(

i heard about different states in america have silly laws when it comes to cars one for instance is: -

whoevers fault it is you just shake on it and sort it yourself noone pays for noones car apart from own how poo is that
