Beefed up drive shafts.....

Featured Replies

It has been suggested that with my new diff going in it would be a good time to beef the drive shafts up, any ideas on where to get some from??

Cheers:thumbup:

Don't know if the ones in the Leon Cupra R are 'beefed up' but I believe their wheel bearings are and can be fitted to the Octavia...so i'm told anyway.

You'll probably have to import some. I've looked for some in this country but with no luck. The supplier I'm using is DRIVESHAFTS SHOP: Stock, Performance Drive Shafts, Aluminum Drive Shaft, Racing Axles. They have kits ranging from 400 bhp to 750 bhp

400 bhp 14520.attach

500 bhp 14521.attach

750 bhp 14522.attach

You'll also have to change the drive flanges on the gearbox to take the bigger inner cv joint. I'm considering the 750 bhp kit because it comes with the flanges and its not going to break. A belt and braces approach I suppose.

The Cupra R drive shafts dont fit as its a six speed box and the shafts are equal length.

To be honest If i was in your position and looking to swap the clutch and install a diff, i'd put a six speed box in there. I know the gears are shorter, but the box is triple shaft, you get equal length driveshafts and it wont break. With 320 lb/ft torque, you are on the limit with a 5 speed.

Cheers for the advice

So a Cupra R gearbox is the answer [02-M?]. I don't understand anything to do with triples shafts, or gearboxes, you can probably tell!!

So presumably the 6 speed 02-M box be a direct replacement ( including drive shafts, gear linkage box etc. ) from the 1.8t [180bhp] Cupra, Cupra R [210 & 225bhp] and Golf 1.8t [180bhp] 25th addition?

Its the 6 speed from the Cupra R that I was meaning. Its a direct replacement and the driveshfts are equal length with stronger inner cv's. So there will be very little, if no torque steer. The 02j has 5 gears over 2 shafts, were the 02m has 6 gears over 3 shafts and is much stronger. Some companies run over 500 bhp with the 6 speed and have no problems.

Its only a suggestion, as you are replacing all the parts anyway. I run a 5 speed with spec 3+ clutch and peloquin. For me to change would be expensive, ie

Agree on the super light flywheel comment - i've got a super-light alluminium one and it rattles like hell! My 02M has rediculously long gears though (4th gear for example maxed out a rolling road recently at 150mph) - think it must be from a deisel!

Is the 6 speed gearbox from a mk.iv Golf pd tdi 130/150 or a Fabia vRS suitable then?

I can get one of those for a few hundred quid.

JBS are putting something silly in their Octy.

Might be worth a phone call with some more info?

JBS run a Cupra R gearbox and drive shafts in James' Octy. It handles the big numbers they put through it.

Its nice to hear the beast is still on form Dave:thumbup:

the driveshfts are equal length.

Hows that possible? The gearbox is still on the n/s. Dont think they run two piece driveshafts with a centre bearing.

Pretty sure the o/s driveshaft is longer, its just twice the diameter and tubular.

Can anyone clarify if this can be done?

you dont want a diesel 6 speed box as the gears will be massively wrong for a petrol car i think.

Well, in theory, when you're in 6th at 140mph, I'm doing 4000rpm. If an octy vRS does the same RPM, then it has a potential 210mph top speed at 6000rpm? :D This all assumes the box fits fine and all links up and works the same way as it does on a vRS Fabia. I wonder if the TDI box is designed to go above 5000rpm at all? (well, obviously it's not "designed" to, but not sure if it would comprimise it with regular trips to 6500rpm?)

DaveU's gearbox might well be off a diesel then.....

bearing in mind J that most properly modified 1.8T's on here will happily rev higher than 6000rpm, more like 7500 or so maybe more so the theoretical top speed is more like 260mph

Steeve, i dont know how expensive it would be for you to get and install the Leon R/TT gearbox, but if price is not an issue, you might want to check out the APTuning gear sets for 02A/02J transmissions. They are pretty much indestructible (proven by the 600bhp+ guys).

It's true that the 02M 6speed tranny is much better than the stock one, but seeing that you're investing so much in your car, why get the better when you can get the best?

This is the site: APTuning - Welcome to APTuning.com | Audi & VW autoparts

The MK1 octy with the standard box could hit a theoretical max speed of just over 170MPH in 5th but to get there would need more BHP. The rev limiter on the MK1 from the factory is at 7K RPM, I used to hit the limiter all the time in my old one.

If your car is standard or slightly mapped then the standard drive shafts are fine, I had little torque steer and didnt break any running 225BHP. I have only seen driveshafts fail when the car has had coilover suspension fitted that has been set to low and the joints fail.
