Autonostics VAG lead problems

Featured Replies

I have a little problem, a work colleague bought this lead the other day

Autonostics :: VAG Compatible Interface Cables :: Dual-K (KKL) Vag-Com Interface VW Audi USB

I can get ross tech version 409.1 US to recognise the lead as below:

---------------------------

VAG-COM: Port Test

---------------------------

Port Status: OK

Interface: Found!

Type: Serial Pass-Through

Opto/Iso: No

Ross-Tech Design: No

---------------------------

OK

---------------------------

but when i connect the lead to my Octy mk.1 the following message appears:

Test complete, car is not ISO/OBD2 compatible.

Is there anything i am doing wrong, does anyone have experience with this lead?

Regards

Jon

you've just opened another can o' worms! :(

Why's that?

Why do you care whether the car is OBD-II compatible?

Thought thats how you knew if the lead would talk to the car??

Whatever i try to do i cannot get the computer and car to interact. It tries several times to open a port/block??? but will not connect. What am i doing wrong??

Jon

Its not a firewall blocking it, is it ?

I don't think firewalls come into this

Try Select -> 01-Engine. What happens?

If it doesn't connect, what does Autonostics have to say about it? After all, they are the ones who claim it should work with VAG-COM, whereas the people who make VAG-COM do not say "works with that Autonostics lead" do they? ;-)

oh marvellous. I just ordered one of these leads before seeing this. Does the cable actually work?

I see RossTech are very sympathetic!

AM I right in thinking it is possible to buy a licence for VAG COM to use with a non dongled 3rd party cable? (assuming the free functionality it not enough).

If NO to this point then I could see why RossTech couldn't give a fig.....

If YES, then why would being "short" with someone here get them any business? :thumbdwn:

If that makes sense.

I forget who said "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit". They were on to something.

My mum always said manners cost nothing.

It's something I've wondered about for a while...

Bill Gates doesn't get angry when people use Linux... he's always got a smiley face on him :)

Ross-Tech cables work with Ross-Tech software. They spend years and money on research making sure that their software works with their hardware.

Why the hell would they give a crap if a third party cable works with their software when its free to download?

Short or not he is still trying to help, despite not making a penny from that transaction, which in my opinion is highly commendable.

If the cable doesn't work, it should be down to the supplier to sort it, if not send it back and get a refund.

huh? How did he try and help - apart from asking why do you care (funny choice of word) if it's Obi****enoB2 compatible?

The joys of software and hardware ;-) I work in the industry and I see it all the time - it's called "passing the buck". (and I really don't expect much from RT in this case - unless there's a karmic interest somewhere). And I do realise why - 'cos it's bloody impossible to troubleshoot with all the hw / sw permutations, compounded by "operator error".

Anyway, my question which seemed to be missed, was if the software is free to download, great. But I thought it had limitations.

In which case I might need to buy a licence - or can't I do that without shelling out a lot on money on the official cable? And I look on the RT web site but couldn't find licence prices, only a form to request a licence (maybe for older cables which were less smart).

I'm a tinkerer, and

I'm an idiot - I found the pricing page.

$99 for the software. Bargain.

Assuming it works with the $15 autonostics cable....

Nothing to do but try the free version out....
