Anyone know the Vag tool part no. for gearbox oil plug

Featured Replies

Want to open up the gearbox oil plug and the plug is deffo a M16 12-point spline but has a protrusion so that you have to use a VAG-specifc tool.

Found a pic, and now the VAG no. - VW #3357

Just check Draper's site or Sealey - or even Laser tools for availability, I'm just "shooting the breeze" now, but when I tried to buy a M14 spine bit to remove the strut/hub clamping bolt with the Torx (my foot) head, I was only offered this M16 security spine bit - but that's sods law I suppose! I think that you will find that one of these sites will list the typical uses for this size of tool - to give you confidence that you will be ordering the correct bit. By the way, the Laser Tools site can be a bit of a nightmare to navigate arround - you really need to use your imagination quite a bit - but it could be worth trying.

Basil , where did you get the tool number from ?

A killer of an internet search - found it as a cross reference to commercial tools mid-way down this page: Volkswagen Tools Volkswagen Tool Audi Tools VW Tools VW Tool Special Service ToolsWent down to the local VAG dealer and they told me they don't sell tools. So I took a regular M16 triple-square tool and annealed it, ground the end so that the protrusions are right to the end of the tool and painfully scraped a 5mm central depression using carbide lathe bits (busted 2!). Vanadium steel is really hard, even softened!

Now it should fit the "tamper-proof" plugs. It would have been easier just to dremel down the central part of the plugs themselves, but I would like to get the proper tool eventually.....

GB on the proper tool anyone?
