changeing spark plugs

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

I have a 1999 Octavia 1.6 petrol and I need to change the spark plugs. They are covered by the air filter etc. What is the removal sequence so no damage is caused.

Cheers all

From memory, remove the obsfurcation cover, and any air ducting that actually gets in your way.

Then remove one plug at a time (makes it easier to get the plug leads back right if you only take one off at any time) (work end to end but it doesn't matter which end you start at). Check the condition of the old plug (not oily, burnt, sooty, or with a cracked core insulator; any of these indicate an engine problem. The picture in the Haynes manuals is quite good for showing what a good or problem plug looks like). Check that the gap on the new plug is correct, and fit it. Do not over-torque the plugs when refitting them (dunno what the torque is offhand; I've got a diesel).
